The colonial stone Clubhouse is slung low across the crest of the hill just north of the Helderbergs taking advantage of the vistas in every direction. Overlooking the Mohawk-Hudson Valley the scenic panorama includes distant mountain ranges in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts. The interior of the clubhouse reflected the period of the fifties and sixties with its distinctive woodwork, decoration and commissioned abstract art. July 23, 1963 marked the formal opening of this new facility.

“Eventually, the parties arrived at a fair price, but the troubles continued. As bulldozers reshaped the land, ACC members continued to play their course. To prevent being hit by errant golf balls, construction crews cut down trees and piled them in front of the greens. More havoc ensued in March 1963, when the old country club pond retaining wall collapsed. Fifteen millions gallons of water, huge chunks of ice and trees cascaded across Western Avenue into homes and businesses.” Williams, Geoff “The Uptown Campus: From Crossroads to Construction Site.” UAlbany Magazine. The Ninth Hole (looking Backward)
The scene of many wrecked score-cards and the Waterloo of records that were all but made. The tee is situated on a slight elevation overlooking the lake, and to play straight for the hole requires 140 yards of clean carry over the water. This can be reduced by edging off a bit to the left, but not too far, or else one’s ball will gracefully disappear into the choicest section of the overheated kitchen previously alluded to. A top or a slice means a watery grave, and many there be that enter therein.

T WO A LBANY C OUNTRY C LUB W OMEN AND T HEIR E XTRAORDINARY A CCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE F IRST N ATIONAL C HAMPIONSHIP “In 1895, the USGA held its first official national championship for men. They did not conduct one for women, so in the fall of that year, women held their own, informal national championship. The following year this situation was corrected, and the first “National Championship for Women” was conducted. The word “Women” was used in the name for an express purpose. In Great Britain, the title was “Ladies”. In America, women wanted it made clear that this new championship was one of gender and not gentility. That first national championship had 25 players, including the Oliver sisters, Cora and Elizabeth, members at Albany Country Club. Cora shot 105 and tied for fifth, which qualified her for the match play portion of the tournament. She lost to the eventual runner

1963 With the move to the Voorheesville site, Loftus & Cummings was hired to create a new logo. The new Shield design did not incorporate the 1950’s logo, but instead reflected the history of the Club and the region. This seems to be a direct result of the emotional upheaval of the forced move and loss of the old club and all it represented. This Shield was sectioned into parts to allow for the affordable printing of multiple colors. Up to four-color printing was becoming more affordable at this time. The first printing of the shield in the archives is burgundy, black and gold.

1890 The club was founded and recognized as the 30th Club in America. The clubhouse was a tumbled down tavern on the old Schenectady Post Road, located in the Sand Plains which is now the site of the State University of New York at Albany. To reach it, one went from Manning Boulevard on a continuation of Washington Avenue and then by a trail to the grounds. The old tavern was rented with several acres of land. A murder had been committed in the cellar and reputed presence of a ghost gave the building a romantic feature. The site was simple and primitive , but the concept was bold.

P INEHURST : A two person team format of play in which both players drive, player A hits player B’s ball and vice versa, the best shot is selected, and players alternate until the ball is holed out. R EVERSE H ORSESHOE : A system of pairings and tee times for the second round of play based on scores from the first round. Players with similar scores are paired together. The lowest scores will tee off late on the front 9 while the highest score will tee off late on the back 9. Players in the middle will tee off early on both sides. S CRAMBLE : A team format in which all players on the team tee off, the best shot is selected and all members from the team hit from that spot. This procedure is repeated until the ball is holed out. S CRAMBLE (M ODIFIED ): The same as a regular scramble, however the player whose shot is selected sits out the next shot. Usually every player putts. S HAMBLE : A team format in which all players on the team tee off, the best shot is selected and all members from the team play their own ball into the hole from that spot. The best score(s) are then counted per hole. S TABLEFORD : A format of play in which the score on each hole is assigned a point value based on par. For example a bogey may be worth 0 points, a par worth 2 points, a birdie worth 4 points, etc.
S TROKE P LAY : A format of play in which the competition is based on the total score for the round rather than hole-by-hole.
