MARCH 2019 the Beauty BOOK
Sometimes I talk to patients who have been feeling off for a while. They don’t have the energy they used to, or they feel like no matter what they do, they aren’t able to lose fat in stubborn areas. What they’re feeling is often due to a hormone imbalance. As we age, our hormone levels change. Some of this is due to normal life cycles: menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. But a chronic imbalance can impact your daily life and leave you feeling not quite yourself. Especially during menopause, in addition to affecting the way you feel, an imbalance can increase your risk for cancer, stroke, and other diseases. We can’t overlook the role our hormones play in our health. They are the chemical messengers in the body that help regulate many important functions. I often have conversations with patients about what we can do to evaluate and regulate hormone levels because bringing back harmony to your hormones can make a big difference in your day-to-day life. Imbalances don’t know gender — both men and women suffer from them. Hormone testing is available for everyone. Using a simple saliva test, you can find out what level of hormones are bioavailable, or active, in the blood. Thanks to scientific research, we know there is a strong correlation between hormone levels found in saliva and the amount that’s available in the blood. The test shows us if hormone levels are healthy. If they’re not, we can recommend hormone replacement options, like BioTE, that bring your hormones back to healthy levels. There’s almost nothing better than helping a patient regain their energy and zest for life — and in some ways, their youth — through medicine. If you’ve been feeling like your energy is lacking, I’m happy to talk to you more about what we can do to boost your health and return balance to your body. It’s what motivates me and makes me excited to come to work every day. I love bringing my patients treatments that benefit their lives and keep them healthy and beautiful.
Finding Harmony
Strategies for a Healthier, Happier Life
There have been a lot of viruses going around the past month, and it makes me think about the simple steps we can take to improve our health. We could probably all use an immune boost, starting with simple changes to our diet, like eating more fruits and cruciferous vegetables, which are also the best foods to eat for glowing, younger- looking skin. Exercise is also key to maintaining and boosting our health. The hormones we produce during exercise help fight off disease and illness. As I’ve shared before, I always recommend patients get the flu shot to keep themselves healthy. I’ve seen too many people end up in the hospital because of the flu. There’s just no reason to take that risk.
To health and happiness,

Set Sail for Vacation
Take Your Next Trip Offshore If you’re lucky enough to have been aboard a ship under full sail, chances are you know the thrill and serenity sailing can give you. If you’ve never been but have always wanted to know what it’s like to get out on the wind and waves, there are many great options available for beginners. Here are some ideas to inspire your next waterside vacation. Start Small For those who dream of becoming a skipper one day, a great way to start is by sailing dinghies. These one-sail, beach-launch boats fit 1–2 people and can be rented at most water sports shops. If you want to make it a family experience, shops usually have 16-foot catamarans for rent as well. Catamarans have two hulls rather than one, making for a smoother, more spacious ride. If you’ve never sailed before, inquire about lessons. Most rental operations have instructors on hand who can show you the ropes. The great thing about sailing is that whether you’re in a 12-foot dinghy or a 60-foot sloop, the same basic principles, rules, and skills apply. Take a Day Sail Many day-sail charters exist for those who want to go out a little farther than a dinghy would permit. If you’ve captained a boat and are familiar with the waters, you can apply for a bareboat charter. However, if you are inexperienced or simply don’t want a local guide at the helm, signing up for a day trip with a skipper and crew is a great option. Do a Full Charter Short of owning your own vessel, chartering a boat for multiple nights is the closest you can get to living out your nautical dreams. Some of the most beautiful destinations on earth — from the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean — are best experienced from the deck of a sailboat. Letting the sea guide you to amazing snorkeling destinations, remote cays, and bustling harbors is the stuff of real adventure.

Spring Treatments That Will Give You a Summer Glow
3 TRENDS TO TRY NOW
With fun spring and summer activities on the horizon, there’s no better time to give your skin a boost by using some of the best anti- aging ingredients trending now. Here are three we’re excited to try this season. Antioxidants in Skincare Pollution is becoming more of a concern, and companies are looking for ingredients that protect the skin not just from sun and weather exposure but also from the damaging effects of pollution. Pollution distributes free radicals into the air that can lead to wrinkles and other skincare issues. Luckily, skincare regimens that include antioxidants protect the skin from pollution’s effects. For example, moringa is highly effective for skin protection, and it also contains plant hormones that promote skin cell regeneration. Probiotics and Prebiotics You’ve likely heard of probiotics, which are bacteria that promote gut health and boost your immune system. Found in various substances from yogurt to skincare products, probiotics have been trending
for the past few years due to their healthy properties. Prebiotics are essentially the “food” for probiotics, and beauty companies are starting
to use them to fuel the probiotics you already have. Collagen-Stimulating Ingredients
Expect to see more naturally derived, collagen-boosting ingredients like Bakuchiol, which is found in the Psoralea corylifolia plant and promotes collagen and elastin production. With natural, anti-aging properties similar to retinol but softer on the skin, Bakuchiol is going to be on the it-list for skincare products this spring. While these might be trends, we expect to see antioxidants, prebiotics, and ingredients like Bakuchiol on the beauty shelf year-round thanks to their anti-aging properties. Talk to your esthetician to find treatments that incorporate these powerful substances and work for your skin to get you the results you desire. When you’re looking for on-trend beauty products and treatments, you’ll find them at Beautique. Visit us online or in person and get everything you need to make a glowing entrance into the next season.
FRESH FINDS
Everything Popcorn
You’ve probably heard the term “superfoods,” which refers to foods that contain high levels of disease-busting, age- defying antioxidants. Here are four ways to get a dose of these amazing benefits. Berries Blueberries in particular are a great source of antioxidants. Add them to smoothies or eat them fresh by the handful. Nuts and Seeds Almonds and walnuts are great options, and you can also try chia or hemp seeds on yogurt. Green Tea 4 ANTIOXIDANT BOOSTERS
Inspired by Food & Wine magazine

3/4 cup popcorn kernels 2 tablespoons flaky sea salt
• •

1 teaspoon black sesame seeds 2 teaspoons white sesame seeds

Once popping, continue cooking and shaking the pan intermittently until popping ceases, about 3–5 minutes. 3. Transfer popcorn to a large mixing bowl. Pour in butter and toss to coat. Finally, add seasoning, toss again, and serve.
With the rise in popularity of matcha, it’s not hard to find a green tea latte at your local cafe.

It’s All About Balance
Zoe Saldana’s Thoughts on Food and Fitness
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Zoe Saldana ate herbs and greens picked fresh from her grandmother’s garden and fish caught the same day. Now as an actress, producer, and mother — often
plant-based meals including ingredients like beans and quinoa. She and her husband have recently found a love of cooking with Asian- inspired ingredients, especially spices. “I try not to deprive my body of anything because the moment I have just salads and protein for a few days, I crave carbs,” Saldana shares with Shape. She aims for balance when it comes to food. She doesn’t believe
working 16-hour days — food that was picked the same day isn’t quite as accessible. She finds balance with fresh, plant-powered meals; short and sweet workouts; and a healthy body image.
“I try to work out three times a week, but I don’t believe in getting on one machine
in diets, cheat days, or restrictive eating. Instead, echoing her childhood habits, she opts for fresh food that doesn’t come from a can. “It’s not that I like to eat super light, just super clean,” Saldana explains. “When I eat everything in balance, I think less about food and more about everything else.”
for 30 minutes,” Saldana tells Shape magazine. With a busy work schedule, she opts for short bursts of speed to get her heart rate up. Intervals are a go-to for Saldana, with rounds of running in place, squats, and medicine ball carries, which give her 20 minutes of sweat-inducing exercise that fits into even the most hectic day.
“If we could design ourselves, we’d all be perfect,” Saldana says. “But we can’t, so why be unhappy about it?” Her realistic outlook is part of a lifelong celebration of who she is, as she is. Saldana embraces the body she was born with, and her healthy choices just serve to reinforce this healthy outlook on life.
“We’re starting to move in the direction of becoming a vegetarian family,” Saldana says. Noting the treatment of animals as one of their motivations, Saldana’s family is opting for more
