Glossary of EPD’s: EPDs are BREED SPECIFIC therefore comparing EPDs across breeds will not be accurate. Please note, we are not reporting the accuracy of the EPD but are reporting the percentage within the breed that the individual’s EPDs fall. E.G. If the percent is listed as 30, then the individual’s EPDs are in the top 30% of the breed for that trait or is better than 70% of the breed. If the percentage is listed as 70, then the individual’s EPDs are in the top 70% of the breed for that trait or is better than 30% of the breed.
We have included the definitions from the Angus, Red Angus and Simmental Associations for reference. See definitions below for EPD’s specific to Charolais, Hereford & LimFlex.
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) , is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an "I", and may or may not include the animal's own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Charolais Specific EPD’s: TSI (Terminal Sire Index) is a formal method of combining Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) – BW, WW, YW, REA, CW, MARB and FAT – into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data. Hereford Specific EPD’s: BMI (Baldy Maternal Index) is a maternally focused index that has a production system based on 1,000- Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed toward Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®). It encompasses CE while also focusing on fertility and weaning weight. It puts more emphasis on IMF vs REA. This index is geared toward commercial programs that have British-cross cows. $CHB (Certified Hereford Beef Index) terminally sire index with Hereford sired calves being marketed through the CHB market. Includes some CE with greater emphasis on WW, YW, REA & IMF. Limousin Specific EPD’s: $MPI scenario when Limousin bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with replacements retained and surplus calves marketed at weaning. EPD’s stressed include CED and MCE, WW, Milk, MW, DMI & ST $IPI scenario when Limousin bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with replacements retained and surplus calves fed out and marketed on a value-based grid that rewards quality & yield. Balances both maternal and terminal traits.
$TPI is constructed to identify terminal sires that produce the highest profit potential fed cattle.
