Area and perimeter

Estimating areas

You will need centimetre squared paper for this activity. In a small group, look at your right hands. Try to estimate whose hand has the largest area. Write your names down in order of area of hands, with the smallest first. Now draw round your hands on squared paper and find the areas by counting squares. Measure the length of each person’s hand and complete a table like this.

Name Length of hand Area of hand

Do the people with the longest hands have the hands with the largest area?
