Calculating with fractions and decimals

2 Let’s subtract decimal numbers using the column method. Find 7.43 − 1.06.

First, subtract the hundredths. We cannot subtract 6 hundredths from 3 hundredths, so we must regroup 1 tenth into 10 hundredths. Now we have 13 hundredths. 13 hundredths – 6 hundredths = 7 hundredths

Step 1

− 1

0 6 7

Next, subtract the tenths. Now we have 3 tenths.

Step 2

− 1

0 6 3 7

Finally, subtract the ones. 7 ones − 1 one = 6 ones

Step 3

So, 7.43 − 1.06 = 6.37.

Use a written method to calculate (a) 4.21 + 3.48 (b) 2.82 + 0.67
