EASTER SUNDAY

Resurrection Sunday: Some Are Still Left with Spiritual Cancer

2 Timothy 2:16-18

But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. (17) And their word

will eat as doth a canker (Cancer): of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; (18) Who concerning the truth

have erred, (strayed) saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of

some. (19) Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them

that are his. And let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Often, when we hear the WORD cancer, terror strikes at the very core of our

hearts. Young children, middle-aged adults, and the elderly. Why is this? Because

here on Earth, it is called a disease. And this disease, man, has not found a cure.

Doctors and scientists who practice medicine have found ways to get cancer to go

into remission. But they have not found a cure.

Certain ailments are called diseases because man has not found a cure. I had

a battle with alcoholism, man called it a disease. But by the grace of God, the woman

with the issue of blood, just by touching the hem of His garment, her Faith made her

well. For over forty years, my faith has made me whole. BUT

Today, There Is A Celebration And There Is A Crisis

Resurrection Sunday , what a glorious day in the life of the church! It is the foundation

of our faith, the proof of Christ’s power over death, the victory shout over the grave. We

come in our best clothes, sing the most triumphant songs, and shout, “ He is risen indeed! ”

But I must ask a hard question today:

If Resurrection Sunday is about the baptism of a new life, why are so many still walking

around with SPIRITUAL CANCER ?

While the church is full of joy today, some hearts are still full of bitterness . While the

sanctuary is ringing with praise, some souls are still chained to sin . While we talk about

resurrection, many have not experienced true transformation .

Paul warned Timothy about people like Hymenaeus and Philetus. They were not just

wrong — they were spiritually toxic . Paul said their words spread like cancer . And

today, there’s still a spiritual cancer spreading in our homes, our pulpits, our pews.

So, let’s talk about it. Because Resurrection Sunday isn’t just a holiday, it’s a diagnosis

and a treatment plan. It’s God’s remedy for the soul sick with sin .

The Nature of Spiritual Cancer

When Paul uses the word cancer (or gangrene in some translations ), he’s talking about

something that spreads silently but destructively. It eats away at life from the inside. Just

like physical cancer can live undetected in the body, spiritual cancer can live undetected

in the soul.

What is spiritual cancer ?

• It is a false teaching that distorts the truth.

• It is bitterness that goes unaddressed.

2

• It is unforgiveness that poisons the heart.

• It is a compromise that we justify and defend.

• It is a religion without relationship, ritual without righteousness.

Spiritual cancer doesn’t always show symptoms at first. People still lift their hands

in worship. They still quote Scripture. They might even preach. But beneath the

surface, something deadly is growing.

And Paul said it clearly: Their message overthrew the faith of some. Cancer hurts the

one who carries it and can contaminate the Body.

The Danger of Resurrection Without Repentance

Look again at 2 Timothy 2:18: “They say the resurrection is already past.”

That might not mean much to us today, but in Paul’s day, some claimed that there would

be no future resurrection. They Spiritualized It, Minimized It, And Twisted It . In other

words, they preached a Resurrection Without Repentance.

Isn’t that what many still do today?

• They celebrate Easter but never surrender.

• They speak of grace but never grieve their sin.

• They wear the cross but never carry it.

Help me somebody

So, Resurrection Sunday becomes a photo op, not a spiritual operation, a church

event, not a soul encounter.

The resurrection of Christ is not just a past event — it is a present power to raise us from

the death of sin. But you can’t be raised if you never admit you’re dead .

Some are sitting in Resurrection Sunday services with cancer in their soul and don’t even

know it . Others know, but they’ve gotten used to it. They’ve adapted to dysfunction .

But today’s message is clear:

The Tomb Is Empty, So You Don’t Have To Stay Full Of Sin.

How Cancer Spreads

Paul warned that the words of false teachers spread like cancer. Let’s break that down for

today.

1. Through Gossip and Division

Some people don’t carry Bibles ; they carry bitterness . Their conversations are

not Christ-centered but complaint-filled, and when they speak, they spread

infection.

2. Through Compromise and Culture

We justify sin by calling it personal preference . We tolerate what God calls

toxic. And little by little, that compromise spreads — until what once convicted us

no longer moves us.

3. Through Coldness and Complacency

4

Cancer dulls the senses. SOME USED TO WEEP IN WORSHIP — now they just

WATCH THE CLOCK. Some used to serve — now they sit. The passion that once

burned has become a flicker.

But church, today is Resurrection Sunday. And resurrection power still heals, cleanses,

and restores. You don’t have to live with cancer anymore.

The Cure Has Already Been Paid For

Here’s the good news: You don’t need to earn your healing. Christ already paid the cost.

Isaiah 53:5 says:

“But He was wounded for our transgressions,

He was bruised for our iniquities.

The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,

And by His stripes we are healed.”

Healed from sin. Healed from shame. Healed from the secret places that no one sees but

God. There is a cure for spiritual cancer, and His name is Jesus!

Jesus didn’t just rise to show off His power. He rose to release that power into you.

Paul said in Philippians 3:10:

“That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection…”

The same power that rolled the stone away can roll your shame away.

The same power that raised Jesus can raise you out of addiction, pride, lust, and legalism.

5

resurreCtIon sunday: some are stIll left wIth spIrItual CanCer

But healing requires honesty. You must be willing to let God examine you. To say like

David in Psalm 139:23-24:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead

me in the way everlasting.”

The Call to Rise

Resurrection Sunday is not just about Jesus getting up —it’s about you getting up.

Romans 6:4 says:

“Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was

raised from the dead… even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

That’s the whole point— the newness of life.

Not just a celebration. Transformation.

Not just resurrection. Renewal.

So today, I invite you to do three things:

1. Repent of the cancer.

Don’t excuse it. Don’t hide it. Confess it. Turn from it. The same Jesus who healed

the leper can heal your soul.

2. Receive His resurrection power.

Don’t just admire the empty tomb— be filled with the living Christ. Ask Him to

breathe on you again.

3. Rise and walk in newness.

6

Whatever was dead — faith, purpose, purity, passion — let it come alive. The

grave clothes don’t fit you anymore.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, we thank You for the empty tomb. But even more than you for the power that still

changes lives. Search our hearts today. Cut out every cancerous cell of sin. Remove every

infection of bitterness, every tumor of pride, every residue of rebellion. We don’t want to

just shout He is risen — we want to rise with You. Give us the newness of life. In Jesus’

name, amen.

BENEDICTION

Eph 3:20-21 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask

or think, according to the power that worketh in us, (21) Unto him be glory in the church
