Unit 11 – Multiplication and division

Multiplying teens numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

We can use the multiplication facts we know to help multiply larger numbers. There are 14 chocolates in a box. How can we work out the number of chocolates in 2 boxes?

1

We can use counting blocks to show the number of chocolates in the two boxes.

14 + 14 = 10 + 10 + 4 + 4 = 20 + 8 = 28

14 × 2 = 10 × 2 = 20 4 × 2 = 8 20 + 8 = 28

Which multiplication table did we use? What is double 14?

2 Look at what happens when we find the number of chocolates in 3 boxes.

14 + 14 + 14 = 10 + 10 + 10 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 30 + 12 = 42

14 × 3 = 10 × 3 = 30 4 × 3 = 12 30 + 12 = 42

Which multiplication table did we use this time? What is triple 14?
