Fractions of quantities

We can use what we know about equal sharing to help find fractions of quantities. Look at this problem. Riana and Winston have 20 toys. Riana plays with 1 _ 4 of the toys. Winston plays with 1 _ 5 of the toys. How many toys do they each play with? Let’s use an array to represent the problem.

 1 _ 4 of 20 toys is 5 because 20 ÷ 4 = 5 Riana plays with 5 toys.

 1 _ 5 of 20 toys is 5 because 20 ÷ 5 = 4 Winston plays with 4 toys.

Letisha plays with 2 _

5 of the 20 toys. How can you use the array to help

you find out how many toys this is?
