Unit 10 – Length, perimeter and area

1 Multiplying by 100 helps us convert metres to centimetres. There are 100 cm in each metre so the number of centimetres is 100 times as many as the number of metres.

2 We can also show measurements as mixed units.

1000 m 1000 m 500 m 2 km 500 metres

2 km 500 m is equal to 1000 m + 1000 m + 500 m = 2500 metres. We can also convert 2 km to metres by finding 2 × 1000.

Look at these problems.

A seat measures 50 cm. A row of these seats measures 3 metres. How many seats are in the row? Riana cycles 3 kilometres. Letisha cycles 4 times as far. How far does Letisha cycle? A plant is 75 cm tall. Four months later it is 2 m tall. How much did it grow in four months?
