More multiplication

Let’s Learn Together

1 A box contains 16 mobile phones. 24 boxes of phones are packed onto a lorry.

How many mobile phones are there altogether? To find an answer we need to multiply 16 by 24. Let’s split the 24 boxes into two groups of 2 tens and 4 ones. We can multiply each group by 16, and then add the result together.

1 6

First multiply one box of 16 phones by 4.

There are 64 phones in 4 boxes.

Next, multiply a box of 16 phones by 2 tens.

There are 320 phones in 20 boxes.

× 2 4 6 4 + 3 2 0 3 8 4

Finally, add the results together.

Did you notice that when you multiply by the tens there will always be a 0 in the ones place?

There are 384 phones in 24 boxes.
