Introducing Our Veterans Day Community Event

It’s often said that we don’t know them all, but we owe them all, and how true this is! In the month of November, Hagerstown Smiles is proud and excited to announce our Veterans Day Community Event for all of our veterans of the United States armed forces in need of dental work. On Friday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, our normal working hours will be extended from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and appointments and services, including cleanings, dentures and partials, fillings, and crowns, will run on a first-come, first-served basis until our schedule fills up. So, call today to schedule your appointment at 301-739-7003! The only type of dental work excluded from this event will be cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening. This will be a one-day event, designated to serve and assist as many veterans as possible — it’s our way of giving back! If you are a veteran and not yet a patient with us, you still have time between now and then to join us as a new patient and get established to evaluate what type of services you may need so we can get you on the books on Nov. 11. If you’ve been a patient with us for a while now, you may remember a few years back, we used to participate in an annual charity event called Dentistry From the Heart. Many local volunteers came together to provide free dental work for our community, and it was an amazing opportunity to give back to everyone and ensure those who needed oral

attention received treatment. Sadly, since the pandemic, Dentistry From the Heart was dismantled.

In an effort to still provide our very best for others and to ensure we properly give back to those who risked their lives for our country, our Veterans Day Community Event was born. Serving our nation in the armed forces is one of the most courageous and selfless decisions anyone could ever make. We want to do our part! If you know someone who may benefit from this community event, please share this information so they can participate! We want to help everyone we can! If you are a veteran and an existing patient, we want to serve you with free dental care!

THE SMART WAY TO FREEZE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

SO THEY ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD

If you’re like us, you get pretty excited when fresh fruit and vegetables go on sale. It means you can buy the good stuff and really stock up! Then you can freeze those extra berries for your smoothies and that broccoli for your stir-fry. This is a great money-saving strategy, but if you’ve done it before, you know freezing fruits and vegetables isn’t as easy as it seems. If you don't do it right, you can end up with clumps of flavorless, stuck-together produce destined for the trash! It doesn’t have to be that way. Next time you’re freezing fruit or vegetables post- sale, use these two hacks to get flavorful, easy-to-cook results every time. 1. Break out the cookie sheet. Berries for smoothies and apple slices for pie tend to stick together when you freeze them, which turns them into one giant lump you have to hack apart to steal a serving. To avoid this, break out a cookie sheet after you’ve washed and sliced your fruit. Spread the

pieces or berries out on the sheet and pop the whole thing in the freezer for a few hours or even overnight. When the fruit is frozen, pour it into a glass jar or freezer bag. Thanks to the initial freeze, nothing will stick together. You can pour a serving into your oatmeal or scoop it with a measuring cup hassle- free. 2. Blanch, blanch, baby! Vegetables lose their crisp texture, bright color, and tasty flavor over time, even in the freezer — but you can hit the pause button on that process by blanching your veggies before you freeze them! Blanching is really simple: All you

PREVENTION IS KEY STAY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SIGNS OF GUM DISEASE

In October, we celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month, a time set aside to encourage everyone to brush up (pun intended) on their oral health. One of the most common oral complications is periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47.2% of adults 30 years of age and older suffer from some type or stage of gum disease. Some common causes of periodontal disease include poor dental hygiene, tobacco use, genetic predisposition, pregnancy and menopause, chronic stress, poor diet, diabetes, teeth grinding, and medications. Spotting gum disease can be easy if you know what to look for. Some of the most common signs include:

To treat gum disease, periodontists specialize in performing safe and effective cleaning procedures such as scaling and root planing. They can also prescribe antibiotics and antifungal medications to stop periodontal disease in its tracks or treat any infection. If any teeth are lost, a periodontist can perform tissue graft treatment to promote natural tissue regeneration and/or insert dental implants to replace the gaps and missing teeth. If the gums have badly receded, periodontists can recontour the gums to even out the appearance, too! To safeguard your oral health, preventing gum disease is crucial! If you notice any gum disease or have concerns, contact your trusted dentist immediately! And remember: Prevention is key! Be sure to brush twice a day for two minutes each time and floss daily! Take care of your teeth so they can take care of you!
