Catholic Education Week kicked off this year from April 30 to May 5, celebrating the identity and contributions of Catholic education with the theme “We Are Many, We Are One”. The week began with the annual Board Mass at St. Finnan’s Basilica in Alexandria, celebrated by Archbishop Marcel Dam- phousse. The Mass was recorded and all CDSBEO students participated virtually on May 2. The next day on May 3, CDSBEO celebrated the official renaming of St. John Paul II Catholic School and St. Mother Teresa Catholic School, and on May 4, students in grades 7-12 joined a live virtual presentation with Catholic speaker Dillon Mendes for an inspirational message about student leadership and the power of social action. Grade 10 students also participated in the Just-Us Youth Day, an activity day centered around social justice led by school chaplains. “We are so blessed to have such passion for Catholic education in our schools. It is amazing to see the activities that have taken place during this very special week, and I would like to thank everyone for the work they have done to make this week so memorable,” said Chair Wilson.

The CDSBEO budget is coming along nicely, and the students had a great time celebrating Catholic Education Week. During its regular meeting on May 16, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) trustees received an update on its 2023-2024 budget, as well as its Catholic Education Week 2023 event. The CDSBEO Finance Department is finalizing the preliminary grant estimates for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Manager of Finance Traci Bloomfield presented an overview of the 2023-2024 draft enrolment and grant revenues to the board. The Board’s forecasted total revenue is $213 million, with 85 percent of revenue from the Grants for Student Needs (GSNs), 9.5 percent from provincial legislated grants, and 1 percent from other provincial grants. “Thank you, Superintendent Hutchinson, for the hard work that has gone into preparing this information for the Board of Trustees. I do understand that the GSNs are a lot of work for the Finance Department, and we appreciate how clearly the information is presented,” said Chair Wilson.
