tAKe-AWAYS • Awareness that silence creates discomfort for some people, but that it also makes people feel heard. • Listening is valuable if you take in someone’s message. • You create a relaxed atmosphere if you take time to listen. SuStAInInG About 6 weeks after this session: Send participants a reminder about ‘listening’. See the communication calendar for further explanation.
SeSSIon BrIeFInG Say: Usually when people are having a discussion (depending on their culture, their personality and the topic) they not always allow the other person time to finish his/her sentence. Especially when it is about a topic that involves emotions and opinions. Ask: Can you think of a situation with a guest when that was the case? Give a few Ambassadors the opportunity to share their experiences. Underline (dis) advantages (quick understanding, assumptions, eager to help, misunderstanding, and working under pressure).
Transformer note: Reinforce read, care, create share in terms of listen- ing and creating magnifique moments.
Say: In this respect, we can all learn from the Finnish! When Finnish people have a discussion, it is almost as if they compete to see who can keep silent longest. Explain: You invite the group to discuss in Finnish. This exercise is done in pairs. The topic is ‘How genuine are people nowadays?’ 1 rule: You can only say something after your partner has finished and you have waited for 4 seconds before you start talking. Onnea! (Which means ‘good luck’ in Finnish!). After 5 minutes, ask the Ambassadors to end the discussion and discuss what this exercise was like. Emphasize the reasons for interrupting a person. Discuss what that does to someone else. Also discuss what it does to us to stay silent for 4 seconds.
