DEAR STUDENTS! I have just returned from a trip to Colorado, where I lived for 12 years. It has already snowed multiple times and the mountains are white. While most would say, “How magical,” I would not agree! In fact, that is one of the main reasons that I wanted to move back home. One year on June 7th, as we were still in school, it was snowing so hard that we could not see across the playground, thus no one was able to go outside and play! No thank you! Did you know: Snow is actually transparent but appears white because light reflects off it. The shape of each snowflake depends on the temperature. Needle like snowflakes form at 28 degrees F and plate-like snowflakes form at 23 degrees F. The world’s largest snowflake was reported to be 15 inches across and was found in Montana in 1887. Most snowflakes fall at a speed of 1-4 mph. Freshly fallen snow absorbs sound, making everything quieter. Where I lived in Colorado, it could snow every single month. One of the ski resorts, Arapahoe Basin, actually closes on July 5th each year! While I am happy about a good January snow here in Tennessee, once a year is enough for me! Here’s to a great snowday or two in January and an early Spring with warm temperatures for us all! Warmly , Dr. Beck
