DEAR STUDENTS! When I was in the 3rd grade, I took violin lessons. I changed schools afterwards and my new school did not offer violin, so that was the end of my music lessons, or at least I thought. My husband gifted a beautiful violin to me for my birthday recently and I began to take lessons all over again. Boy, is playing the violin hard?! Learning to play a musical instrument is like learning a new language. It creates a heavy load on the brain. All of a sudden, I am thrown into the very beginning stage of learning a new task and I get impatient to be better. It requires practice and practice and practice. I see lots of failure and at times I get discouraged.
I know that learning anything new can require a commitment to the learning and the road is not always smooth. I am used to getting things quickly and there is nothing fast about this process. Some rules of thumb for learning something: 10,000-hour rule - This rule of thumb suggests that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master a complex skill. However, some say this rule is an oversimplification. 20 Hour Rule - This rule suggests that it takes about 20 hours of practice to learn a new skill. Practice More Often - Practicing more frequently can help you improve faster. However, you can still make progress practicing a few times a week. What new skill are you learning? What struggles have you had? Do not give up when things are hard and know that with perseverance, success is attainable!
