The European Pine Marten The European pine marten lives in Northern Europe’s forests and is part of the mustelid family, which includes otters and badgers. They have chestnut-brown fur, a creamy-yellow chest patch, and long tails for balancing in trees. Pine martens usually live 3-4 years, though some have lived up to 11 years. In captivity, they can live as long as 18 years! In the wild they are most active at night. They nest in hollow trees, abandoned bird nests, or rock crevices, and stay underground in cold winters. These solitary animals mark their territory with scent glands, and mothers communicate with their kits using “twittering” sounds. Agile climbers and shy by nature, pine martens play an important role in forest ecosystems!

European Pine Marten Fun Facts They spend a lot of time in trees, where they feel safe. Their bushy tails help them balance as they climb. Although they’re carnivores, pine martens love to eat berries, fruits, and even honey. They’ll climb trees to raid bird nests or beehives. Pine martens are super agile and can leap between trees with ease. They’re like little acrobats of the forest! Pine martens live in some of Croatia’s most beautiful areas, like Plitvice Lakes National Park and Risnjak National Park. Pine martens clean themselves frequently, just like cats, which is why their fur always looks shiny.
