Engine Diagnostics

Modern Sensor Technology 2.0 2/10/24, 8:30-11:30 am Class #115, DeVos Gallery Overlook D

Advanced Base Engine Analysis 2/10/24, 8:30-11:30 am Class #111, Amway Pearl Room This course focuses on what can be a VERY difficult driveability or Check Engine Light diagnosis; a base engine problem. What can make base engine problems difficult to diagnose? Well for a start, there is no scan tool or scope that can tell you exactly what is wrong with an engine (for example: that the #4 cam lobe is worn, the timing belt is off ½ or 1 tooth, or that a vehicle with a misfire code failure is due to a base engine problem.) Any technician can diagnose a broken timing belt, this course focuses on the not so obvious failures. Trying to Identify engine problems by disassembly of components is not a good option for diagnosis, since it is very time consuming. This course takes your diagnostics to the next level, by expanding on the theory of engine operation. You will then use that theory to provide fast "real world" diagnosis without disassembly! From volumetric efficiency testing, compression theory, valve timing analysis to misfire diagnosis, this course will give you the tools to quickly and accurately diagnose base engine problems. This course is also excellent for the seasoned veteran, as many concepts that have applied to older engines, no longer apply to today's engines. This course covers both import and domestic engines and USES TOOLS YOU ALREADY OWN. This is NOT a pressure transducer class! Presented by: ATEC Automotive Speaker: Dave Scaler

This course provides a walkthrough of various sensor technologies. We will examine DTCs and their code, as well as set criteria in relation to various conditions through the use of multiple case studies. Presented by: NGK Speaker: Philip Austin

The ABC's of Electrical Systems 2/10/24, 8:30-11:30 am Class #126, DeVos River Overlook A

Understanding how circuits are built and components function are key in any system. This course starts right at the components, works outward from the power sources to understanding the road map traveled to and from. This course is designed to help a beginning technician navigate on their electrical diagnostic training path. Areas covered are as follows; components and their operation, batteries and operation, circuit types and the flow, reading and using a wiring diagram, and basic starter and alternator function. 2/10/24, 1:30-4:30 pm Class #200, Amway Emerald Room A

Vehicle downtime is the biggest enemy of a productive and profitable fleet of commercial vehicles. Through the years, few things have impacted the ability to service contracts or accounts more than having vehicles in a service bay rather than on the road. It is often the overlooked maintenance, or a desire to get back on the road faster, taking short cuts that cause a vehicle to be down unnecessarily, impacting your company goals. In this class, taught by world class instructors from MAT HD, we will explore the importance of proper and complete brake repairs in the commercial sector to increase vehicle uptime and production for your fleet.

Intro to Electric Vehicles 2/10/24, 1:30-4:30 pm Class #232, DeVos Gallery Overlook B

This clinic provides easy to understand information about how an actual electric vehicle works. Reducing or eliminating emissions is high priority for vehicle manufacturers. One way to achieve this goal is to increase the number of zero emission vehicles on the road. California has a zero-emission mandate and China has also adopted a version of California’s plan in its new energy mandate. BEV production numbers are on the rise and are soon going to be commonplace. The time is here to start learning about BEV’s and preparing for this fundamental shift in automotive technology. This clinic will present a solid overview of components, operation and the tooling you will need to successfully compete in the BEV market. We will discuss BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) battery packs, invertors, converters, electric motors, normal-safe service procedures, and the various modules that control the vehicle’s electrical systems. After completing this seminar, the student will have the knowledge to: Invest wisely in the special tools required for service of BEV’s, Recognize common components shared between Hybrids and BEV’s, Identify components found only on BEV’s, Understand battery construction, cooling and testing methods, Recognize power flow through the BEV drivetrain Presented by: Garage Gurus | DRiV Speaker: Mark Kenyon

Scan Data Diagnostics with Fuel Trim and More! 2/10/24, 1:30-4:30 pm Class #223, DeVos Grand Gallery E With the ever-expanding capabilities of scan tools, diagnosis is becoming easier if you know how to interpret data. This class will focus around fuel trim values in conjunction with other data PIDs. Many case studies will be used to illustrate points like: incorrect fuel injector flow rate, what you didn’t realize you needed to know about Ethanol, EVAP, and more. A

This is a critical thinking or logical approach class to address many of the issues that face techs every day; working on systems that are new to them or that they have little or no experience diagnosing. The course is a mix of critical thinking, theory, diagnostic testing methods, tooling, and real-world case studies. Three areas will be addressed: mechanical testing, fuel trim diagnostics, and ignition testing. Graphing scan data, archiving data and other useful diagnostic software will be discussed. Lots of real world, not-so-forward case studies will be used to illustrate these processes and techniques. Having a sound foundation of the essentials will aid techs in honing their root problem solving skills. Presented by: The Drivability Guys Speaker: Eric Ziegler Misfire Diagnostics 2/10/24, 1:30-4:30 pm Class #222, DeVos Grand Gallery D Got a pesky misfire or misfire codes that has been giving you fits? Sometimes something that is perceived to be simple can be frustrating and/or time consuming. Generally, misfires can be caused by three things: ignition, fuel, or mechanical issues. This course will investigate diagnostic techniques required to narrow the offender quickly and efficiently to one of these three possibilities. Emphasis is placed on a logical approach and effective use of appropriate testing techniques. While scan tools and scopes will be the primary focus of this class, other tools will be used as well. Real world case studies will be used to illustrate these efficient and effective diagnostic techniques. Presented by: The Drivability Guys Speaker: Eric Ziegler
