he architecture of modernity in this edition focuses on the city of Antofagasta, in an in-depth analysis by Claudio Galeno that pro- vides us—with unpublished and excellent images, in an excellent text—a city with important works from the modern movement, which is part of the series of Chilean cities we have been present- ing since we began this journey with the city of Arica in issue 51 of AOA Magazine. As a common thread, in this issue, we have incorporated ar- chitecture for tourism in Chile and its future prospects into both the main feature and the Heritage section. We highlight the con- tribution of state institutions, such as the State Railway Company EFE and the National Hotel Company HONSA, along with state visions and policies that have contributed to the design and construction of good accommodation buildings throughout the country. Obituario Arquitectura Internacional 2025 El año 2025 marcó la partida de destacadas figuras de la arquitectura mundial, cuyos legados continúan inspirando a nuevas generaciones de arquitectos y urbanistas.
6 de marzo: Ricardo Scofidio (Estados Unidos, 1935–2025)
Cofundador del reconocido estudio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, el neoyorquino Ricardo Scofidio falleció el 6 de marzo de 2025, a los 89 años. Figura clave en la arquitectura experimental y urbana contemporánea, fue autor junto a Elizabeth Diller de muchos proyectos entre ellos el High Line Park y la remodelación del museo MoMA en Nueva York, proyectos emblemáticos de la regeneración urbana de esa ciudad.

MOP Architecture Directorate
On this occasion, we are also celebrating, along with the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Archi- tecture Directorate (DA) in 1875. The country's fine public architecture has been built thanks to the work carried out by the DA over the last century and a half, creating works that today constitute Chile's archi- tectural and historical heritage, and it will continue to do so through public-private partnerships. Building future heritage and preserving and restoring the architectural heritage of our cities and towns is an imperative that we cannot ignore if we are to rebuild the deteriorated historic centers of many cities and thus restore abandoned, unsafe public spaces occupied by those who destroy social harmony and civic coexistence. Recognizing a career trajectory in a timely manner and presenting an impeccable architectural legacy is part of Borja Huidobro's work, both nationally and internationally, which we present in the Featured Architect section with an overview of his vast architectural contribution in his early professional career by Mariano Valdés and then in partnership with the A4 office in a text by Sebastián di Girolamo. His projects are already part of the architectural heritage of the last 50 years in cities such as Santiago and Paris. I would like to mention the Villa San Luis Memorial Museum Com- petition, which, after many years of setbacks and delays, finally got off the ground and was judged this year. We hope it will be built in 2026. This historic event will heal the wounds of the past caused by events that were very painful for families who lived in the neighborhood and were evicted half a century ago. With this issue, we want to contribute to the dissemination and knowledge of the discipline and development of our cities and urban spaces that are relevant to people.

Teórica y crítica de arquitectura brasileña, Ruth Verde Zein falleció el 21 de agosto en São Paulo. Fue profeso- ra, investigadora y referente intelectual en el ámbito de la crítica latinoamericana. Su labor académica y su libro “Arquitetura Brasileira Contemporânea” marcaron una huella duradera. Recibió el Premio Rogelio Salmona por su aporte a la reflexión sobre la arquitectura moderna en América Latina.

In 2025 the Architecture Directorate of Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) will celebrate 150 years of existence, marking a milestone in the history of the country's institutional and territorial development. Since its founding in 1875 as the Central Office of Civil Architects, this public service has established itself as the State's technical unit that manages, designs, and constructs public buildings such as schools, hospitals, courthouses, police stations, and cultural centers throughout the coun- try, in addition to carrying out important work to preserve architectural heritage and incorporate national art into public spaces. This anniversary invites us not only to look back on the past with pride, but also to reflect on the present and future of public architecture in a con- text marked by social transformation, the climate crisis, digitalization, and the need for more inclusive, sustainable, and participatory infrastructure. A History of Public Service and Commitment to the Country The history of the Architecture Directorate is closely linked to the Chil- ean State's modernization process. In its early years, its work focused on building our nation's identity. This is how public buildings for the nascent public institutions were erected, responding to the needs of a country that was just coming into being and required infrastructure to consolidate its institutions and guarantee basic rights to its citizens. At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, major public works associated with the Republic´s Centennial began to be built, and it was the Architecture Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works that promoted most of the emblematic works that today constitute our public heritage. For the Centennial, the city's own role as a builder of nationality emerged as a key issue. Probably one of the most emblematic works of that period is the National Library building, which was constructed in several stages, according to the design of architect Gustavo García del Postigo. The first stone of the building was laid on August 24, 1913, in a ceremony presided over by the President of the Republic, Ramón Barros Luco, and the building was inaugurated in 1924. During the 20th century, the Architecture Directorate established itself as the main technical body in the field of public building, executing emblematic works that are now part of national history. These include the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Stadium, Santiago Central Station, the former Chilean National Congress Palace, Villa Grimaldi, the Votive Temple of Maipú, the Central Post Office in Santiago, the Univer- sidad de Chile Law School, the Municipal Theater of Viña del Mar, and the Cerro Castillo Presidential Palace, among others. Tras un período como seminarista, retomó sus estudios y se tituló de arquitecto en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile en 1971. Inició su carrera en reconocidas oficinas, entre ellas las de Carlos Alberto Cruz C. y Alemparte y Barreda, experiencia que cimentó su sello profesional: rigor técnico, criterio urbano y vocación pública. Durante más de 30 años sirvió en Direcciones de Obras Mu- nicipales (DOM) de Lampa, Providencia, Las Condes y Vitacura. Desde ese rol contribuyó decisivamente a profesionalizar la gestión municipal de proyectos, elevando estándares de revi- sión, trazabilidad y transparencia en los procesos de permisos. Fruto de esta trayectoria publicó una de las primeras guías para profesionales de las DOM y formó a numerosas generaciones en todo el país a través de la Fundación Konrad Adenauer. En el ámbito de la Revisión Independiente, fue pionero: constituyó una de las primeras oficinas de Arquitecto Revi- sor Independiente, inicialmente junto a su socio Guillermo Bermúdez y posteriormente junto al arquitecto Raúl Arrate. Fue socio fundador de la Asociación Nacional de Reviso- res Independientes (ANRI), en la que participó activamente, ayudando a consolidar el rol del revisor independiente como garante técnico y ético del sistema. En esta especialidad le correspondió informar proyectos emblemáticos, entre ellos Costanera Center, aportando solvencia normativa y criterio urbano en iniciativas de alto impacto. Asimismo, fue socio de la Asociación de Oficinas de Arqui- tectos (AOA), espacio en el que valoró el diálogo profesional y la construcción colectiva de buenas prácticas. Ejerció su profesión hasta poco antes de su fallecimiento. Más allá de su obra pública y gremial, su mayor orgullo fue su familia. Casado con Lucía Wormald, deja a sus hijos Florencia, Margarita y Tomás, y a nueve nietos, su legado más entrañable. Acompañamos con mucho cariño a su familia.
14 de septiembre: Nicholas Grimshaw (Reino Unido, 1939–2025)
En Londres falleció el arquitecto británico Nicholas Grimshaw, una de las figuras más destacadas del movimiento High Tech. Autor de obras emblemáticas como la Estación de Waterloo y el Eden Project en Cornualles, Grimshaw fue presidente del Royal Insti- tute of British Architects (RIBA) y referente en el uso innovador de materiales y estructuras industriales en la arquitectura contemporánea.
23 de septiembre: Kongjian Yu (China, 1963–2025)
El arquitecto y paisajista chino Kongjian Yu, fundador del estudio Turenscape y creador del concepto de las “Ciudades Esponja”, falleció el 23 de septiembre de 2025 en São Paulo, durante la Bienal de Arquitectura. Formado en la Universidad de Harvard, Yu fue un in- fluyente defensor de la infraestructura ecológica y del diseño urbano resiliente frente a las crisis ambientales del siglo XXI.

3 de octubre: Enrique Ciriani (Perú, 1936–2025)
El arquitecto peruano Enrique Ciriani, figura clave de la arquitectura moderna latinoamericana, falleció en París el 3 de octubre de este año. Fue socio del chileno Borja Huidobro en sus primeros años en Francia, y autor de una vasta obra de vivienda colectiva inspirada en los principios del modernismo de Le Corbusier. Su pensamiento y su enseñanza marcaron a generaciones de arquitectos en América Latina y Europa.
