SAMPLE QUOTES STRENGTHS
Commitment to Mission/Vision • I am most proud of the members are committed to help the least of these
• I am most proud of the fact that the people in this group are really concerned about the least of these!! • The build district has been able to connect community supporters to improve daily life with the build district. • Proud of the history and commitment to improve outcomes. • Most proud of our commitment and our vision. Community Partnerships • Community Partnerships: (Person 1) “You know, I think one of the biggest benefits of this particular geography in this particular area of talent is that we’ve got some really strong, longtime existing organizations and in the communities, the four the four neighborhoods that are being served by the military. Prior to the existence of the military, I don’t know if there was a good kind of kind of one stop shop organization that was helping to connect all those organizations and efforts. I think this organization, in some ways has, has filled that gap fill that role. And I think there’s been benefit. We know whether it’s mercy met or open door through spring, etc., or Fox Housing Authority, there’s, I think there’s been some real benefit. And frankly, just comfort in the neighborhood of knowing kind of where it’s working, what laying there in...” and (Person 2) “...there’s so many things that are great that were already going on in our neighborhoods, and now we’re together and working.” • Community Partnerships: “Certainly the partners that we have, [inaudible 00:00:07] partner organizations do what they’re doing, the strength of their boards, what they’ve accomplished in the neighborhood.” • Community Partnerships; “The housing that comes with (Mercer University expansion), just the number of people that comes with that is going to be a huge and positive infusion. What we have already seen is, I don’t know if I could call it speculation, but we’ve seen more market rate, housing development that has come off of that investment. Like I said, it’s all riverfront property. You get some acreage on the river there and it is knock your socks off. And to have that in close proximity to your downtown business district, close proximity to your healthcare offerings, your hospital system, it is very well located.” • Community Partnerships; (PERSON 1) “I get behind the good ideas of our partners and whatever it is that they’re doing things. Just however we can support them to help bring those ideas to fruition and to bring awareness to the good change. I think in the community. I mean, if we just harp on the doom and gloom of the real dire cases, that’s the real broken people and situations, it’s depressing. But if you see good change and how it’s affecting people really positively, I think you can still make the connection here’s a real problem in our community. This is what poverty is. But I would approach it from a positive standpoint.” - (PERSON 2) “...the housing authority probably between that two projects and their vouchers, they probably have over 500 families in this area. And I think partnering with them and engaging their Residents with Mercy Med and Fox and working with the parents with job training and education, I think that’s a real opportunity. Because the housing authority doesn’t do that, they just provide housing. And 30 years ago they tried to do some different things through the authority and they stopped.” • Community Partnerships: “I think one thing that just runs through all of those comments is that the strength of the partnerships and collaboration for the building.”
Community Relations • I am most proud of our community concern
• If we assigned board members to target areas to go out and connect with the Residents. • TMD is unique because it connects people and it is inclusive in order to bring all groups together. • They are the connector. That’s a strength, the connector. Collaboration and visiting.
• We build relationships within the greater Columbus community, create visibility along second avenue, in terms of accomplishments improvements in housing to date and business activities on second avenue, and then our relationship with Fox.

Creative/Innovative approach to addressing issues • Creative/Innovative Approach to Addressing Issues; “...we’re unique in Columbus, because the other neighborhood associations have been with those neighborhoods for years and years and years and years. And we made a neighborhood associate collection of these four neighborhoods that didn’t exist before. And for what we have been able to accomplish, either individually or as an investor for because of us collectively. It’s rapid transformation. That and I’m just comparing it to Uptown and midtown, it’s rapid compared to what they’ve done, which is bigger than what we’ve done, but not in the same timeframe, especially with the last two years. So it’s like any progress at all.” • Creative/Innovative Approach to Addressing Issues: (Person 1) “I would honestly say the growth for that area. We know that, its a reason for every plan. And so just seeing the overall growth in such a short amount of time.” and (Person 2) “Or kind of put a hesitation on. Anything that can stunt that growth. So I just think that’s amazing. And I kind see that going through with the vision and the different opportunities that they provide.” Location • Location: “I think our location is what is going to make the difference in a positive way. Uniquely this neighborhood is right there in the middle. If you live in north Columbus and you’re coming downtown, you’re traveling through. Frankly, if you’re in south Columbus and you’re leaving town or going up to north Columbus, you’re traveling through. I think where the middle district is going to be really successful is the fact that it is not out of sight out of mind for anybody. Because if you’re in Columbus, you travel Second Avenue and you see it, you experience it. I think for that reason alone, that gives us a huge advantage to any efforts that are taking place in any other parts of town.” Diversity of communities • Community Relations: “...And that the prosperity of one of those four neighborhoods is not overshadowing or that we are including all four neighborhoods, sort of the old playing of what all neighborhoods are sharing in that prosperity dependent on their needs, which are different.” • Diversity of Communities: “I will say for the unique piece with the community being made of four different neighborhoods, there is a Jack and Jill of all church. There’s someone that knows how to make cakes. There’s someone that knows how to do hair. There’s someone that knows how to build houses. You literally can tap into anything. And I think that’s what makes the neighborhood really like, wow, we have some amazing innovative Residents in this area. Now, how do we channel all of them into like supporting thriving and going to the next level, but there is literally a Jack and Jill of all trade in the entire community.”
OPPORTUNITIES
Small business development/support • Small Business Development/ Entrepreneurship : “ think the Mill District has the opportunity to be kind of like the hub of the city of Columbus for entrepreneurship. It has the ability. We have so many creative, innovative, artistic people that have somehow ended up in the Mill District that it has the potential to be that place. That spot that you want to start a business and be successful, go to the Mill District. They have the means, the way, the how, the secret sauce.” • Community, entrepreneur, talent building hub and resource center would be a great support to grow small businesses. More successful, if Residents are truly engaged in the process, as echo over an area conduct.
Resident Entrepreneurship • Resident Entrepreneurship: “Encouragement of business ownership among resident’
Public safety • One of the major threats that we see almost daily is the safety of the Residents. Students can’t play outside of 4:30 in the afternoon, cause of fear shootings. We have a serious problem.

Early Childhood Development • Early Childhood Development: Prenatal Care Education/Resources: “But there’s some things that happen before they didn’t get in the classroom. And so, it’s that prenatal care in peace because when you start talking to these families, you start to see, there’s a continuing cycle of no prenatal care there. These things are that can already set up a child fulfill you by the time they get to early child education. And so I think that we as a community, have an opportunity to leverage some of that education, even from just an understanding of, not necessarily good touch, bad touch, but just the body and giving facts. And understanding to build things up that when that mom is pregnant, the importance of going to the doctor.” (continued) “The importance of what goes in her body. The importance of why we need you to take those prenatal vitamins. Even though they may be big course meals. Why we need you to be on this road, because this helps mom and baby. When baby gets here and is ready for learning [inaudible 00:22:44].” (continued) “And so I think we need to take some more time educating the community, and the people. How can we kind of go hand in hand with this wellness piece and this education piece to work.” • Early Childhood Development (Early Learning Center): “...what’s the biggest bang for my buck thing people could do, they said early learning center. And that starts the child out extremely early, that’s when apparently most of the development.” • Early Childhood Development (Prenatal Care): “...education is central and you think of education in various capacities, not just in the classroom setting. I think we have to go back to just the conception of the life starting process. Because a lot of these families, when you really dig deep and have some really thorough conversations, there was no prenatal care. Which we’re talking about, no prenatal care that’s already starting on child behind before we get into early learning. And therefore there is no bonding time such as reading and letting a child hear music and the things that help with the development.” (continued) “So regardless when that child walks in the door, they are already behind. I mean, even for sight words that you are teaching a child, in the beginning they’re already behind. So it’s almost like you’re already starting in a race that you’re already in last place. And so I think you have to see how you can pull the wellness piece and the education being kind of almost an ongoing walk together. Because that’s the only way that you’re going to get ahead of some of these things that are going to continue to be not necessarily an issue, but you’re going to feel like, okay we’re crossing the same bridge again.” (continued) “You have Mercy Med who welcomes everyone and the community receive them. Because I think that’s one thing that we have to realize, the Mill District is four different communities. They have four different types of families and people, and that looks different. And we have a wonderful partner like Mercy Med that has done an excellent job from a branding perspective, from a connecting perspective and making it very personable that no matter who walks through the door, we’re going to meet the needs.” • Early Childhood Development (Early Learning Center): “I think another huge win would just be early childhood education and improving that.’ (continued) “Finding ways to positively impact kids at that stage in life to obviously stair step them onto a path of good outcome or good opportunity.”.
Community Beautifications • Community Beautification “Streetscaping certain areas” (continued) “Beautification, that kind of stuff”
• Community Beautification: “And if that were cleaned up a little bit so that all the people in the area truly are the ones that feel what we’re expressing it would be a totally thriving and dynamic place with just a little bit more coordination the city and the community to clean up, and when I say clean up I don’t just mean physical things but just to clean up the area in a lot of ways.”
Education Improvements • More avenues for career, not threats, but other opportunities I should say. More avenues for career pathway that begin in elementary school and stay consistent in course offerings through middle and high school. Consider a two year graduate, urban agriculture, culinary, which one do y’all call it, culinary program, that is offered starting in elementary through high school. We did that one. To be more successful, we need to continue to develop opportunities for early learning, specifically [inaudible 00:19:08], as well as job training and job creation. • Education: Student Career Development: (Person 1) “We have some great resources as far as career pathways for adults. True Springs program and open doors program. I feel like I’ve had a lot of conversation around us where we lose the kids after elementary school. Once they get into middle school, high school, it just seems to be lack of hope and goals for the children. As far as what’s next.” and (Person 2) “German high school, which is the one that [inaudible 00:23:40]. We have a great college and career focus with a lot of [inaudible 00:23:47]. And so even more specifically, it’s that middle school piece we’re taking great care and transferring, and they go to middle school and that’s when they [inaudible 00:23:57], when that happens and just get they’ll we find because they’ve got great pieces over there ready for them. And that they get they’re ready to learn, that kind of thing. And I think that’s always my heartburn, because when they leave... They’ll be back, they to school [inaudible 00:24:25] about that. But, it’s just somebody focusing on them, knowing them.”

• Educational Development, Job Opportunities, Local Community Investment: “I think we’ll be successful if we’re able to develop things in the Mill District that the existing population can take advantage of and benefit from. Whether it’s educational, career oriented, that type of thing.” • ‘Education (Increased Parental Involvement): ‘”...parent involvement more in my schools. And not that they don’t want to, but, they got six kids.” (continued) “So when I can hear that my school partners are saying, “Oh my gosh, we went from having two parents at open house to having 22 parents at open house.”
ASPIRATIONS
Workforce Economic Development • The workforce development focuses is very good and prepared this part of our community for current and future jobs. • Like to see more families with education training credentials, to enter the workforce and start a business. That’ll provide family sustaining income, most passionate about creating and providing opportunities for family development and growth.
Housing Development • Additional investment in housing is critical.
Health and Wellness (Education, Expansion, Food Access) • Fresh food access, nutrition, education, urban agriculture, and health. • Expanding more healthcare opportunities into the community • Better educating individuals about their health and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
Inclusive Community Engagement • Increased Community Engagement and Involvement: “When we have a great program with one of our community partners through Open Door... And it’s a great program if you’re into culinary arts...If we can pack that house, which is like 13 people, that would be great. To stay in the program, work the program, and have a job at the end of the program.” Walkable Communities • Walkable Community: “I have a desire to see safer streets. The Mill District’s streets are terrible. Some of our crossing walks don’t work. And so there are areas that I actually can see if you’re coming into I-85 into, Newnan from Columbus, and that huge bridge that says, “Newnan.” I can see a huge walk bridge, cause a lot of the people, the pedestrians walk. So I can see us pulling those people off the ground so that they don’t get hit, because this is the busiest street in the city of Columbus. And having a huge walk bridge that now allows people to continue to walk in their community, but we’ve taken them off the ground so they can be safe. And the sign says the Mill District.” Community Events/Social Events • Community Events / Social Events: “I’ve seen some help fairs and some things like that, which obviously meets one of your goals. I would love to see some big social events there. You’ve got, that highlight the area, that bring people in to see other parts of the community. Gives us an opportunity to show off the community, I think gives potential small businesses and idea of what economic return they might get if they want to build in that area.” • Community Events: Social Events: “I can see in the Mill District that we’re hosting community events, where people are now being more so educated by their neighbors and understanding what’s going on on the other side of the street and feeling comfortable and safe”

Garden • Garden: “I think the garden, I personally feel it gives hope. And I know you’re like a garden gives hope? But when one has seen the same thing over and over again, that’s all you know. Like if it looks like trash, I feel like trash. I mean, you take on what you see. It’s almost like a manifestation. You don’t see positive things, you feel that’s the end all be all.” • Garden: “I like gardening, and the flowers in the area, making sure everything looks nice. I love gardening, they’ll tell ya I’m passionate about making sure everything looks good and the street I’m on right now we have three empty houses and it’s really hard to keep that street up by myself so, my husband will take care of it for me.”
RESULTS
Enhanced Educational & Employment Opportunities/Outcomes • Enhanced Educational & Employment Opportunities: “Jobs, people becoming employed.” (continued) “And attracting investment.” (continued) “How will we know? I don’t know if this will be the only way, but when we’ve achieved our goals, Fox is no longer a Title 1 school.”
Enhanced Economic Development Opportunities • Revitalization of housing and businesses in the community and did pride of place.
Enhanced Employment Opportunities • (Same as Employment Opportunities)
Increased Housing Development Homeownership • N/A Is not filtered in the file
Better Health & wellness Outcomes • N/A Is not filtered in the file
Increased Residential Entrepreneurship • Increased Residential Entrepreneurship: “I think if we could do some job development in the area. I think if we’re able to do that, whether it’s we find five residents to start a lawn care business, or maybe we find a food packaging company that wants to move into the neighborhood and they’re decent paying jobs for people, for community members. I think those will all be successes. But since one of our struggles, particularly in this community, is access to job and upward mobility, I think that’d be a huge win.” Enhanced Community Engagement • Enhanced Community Engagement: (Person 1) “...(Do what another org did) put together what they call you, the navigators were the ambassadors, and it was almost like the big business improvement district downtown with the ambassadors where the purple shirts, and so there were people in their unique neighborhoods, just like we have four neighborhoods that were identified.” and (Person 2) “So I think actually getting involved and showing them on the other side of artwork that success. And if we can do that, I think we will fulfill our mission as it’s like, we call it the army” • Enhanced Community Engagement: “I think you’ll know that you’re successful if you’ve got buy in from the people who are here. Obviously, there’s some hurt that sort of lingers in people that have been here for a long time. And I think that if you tap into what you’re all talking about is stuff that requires manpower that we have to be willing to give.”
