CASE STUDY Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital
LOW GWP REPLACEMENT
The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton needed replacements for its aging chillers. The hospital required a solution that not only matched capacities of the existing system but also reduced the global warming potential (GWP) of the refrigerants used on-site. The project was executed in three distinct stages. This phased approach allowed for continuous assessment and ensured that the hospital’s cooling needs were met without any interruption. The strength of coordination between Cooltherm and our partners was essential to a successful project completion.
The location of the hospital’s chillers necessitated the need for a complex crane lift both to extract the old equipment and install the new – all without disrupting the hospital’s operations. To achieve this, three separate crane lifts were required to maintain operations and redundancy
throughout the installation process. The successful completion of each lift demonstrated Cooltherm’s expertise in
handling complex installations within sensitive environments. Cooltherm’s ability to manage both the specialised equipment and the intricate logistics of the crane lifts made us the ideal choice for this project.

THE CHILLERS ALONE SAVED VODAFONE 10% ON THEIR ENERGY BILL COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR
CASE STUDY Vodafone Testing Facility
OVER £100,000 SAVED
The project was to replace Vodafone’s aging chillers which were struggling to provide smooth water temperatures to the computer equipment rooms. The project was managed as a phased approach: replacing one chiller at a time over a period of four weeks, guaranteeing the data centre had 100% up time throughout the transition. Cooltherm installed new Turbomiser chillers that matched the original chillers’ cooling capacity of 280kW at 35% efficiency, with the capability to increase up to 400kW each. The machines were designed to be more compact than the average chiller of this capacity improving service and maintenance access to a restricted ground-level chiller compound.
The new chillers now operate with precise capacity control because Turbomiser matches the required load KW per KW. The new chilled water system is now operating with a variable chilled water volume, so only the water flow needed by the building is pumped . The chillers alone saved Vodafone 10% on their energy bill compared to the previous year, with each percentage point saved saving the client over £1000.00 per month. And with green credentials in mind, 80kg of F-gas refrigerants had also been removed from site during the conversion process.

CASE STUDY Cardiff Interchange
Located in Central Square, the 500,000 sq. ft interchange building and development included a 14-bay bus station and a 12-storey office space, alongside the 318 HQM-certified buy-to-rent apartments. Keeping the building to the required living and working temperature was Cooltherm’s remit. The project required specified, installed and maintained chiller units that fit in a very specific footprint. As the chillers are installed so close to the 318 apartments, sourcing equipment with low operating volume was imperative. COOLING OVER HALF A MILLION SQUARE FEET
Given the size of the development, a chiller with high capacity was essential. It was determined that a Turbomiser chiller from Geoclima would fit the project, with its high capacity (up to 800kW), low noise levels (<65dB), and footprint that matched almost exactly to the plant space. Through consultation with our network of contractors, the chiller was installed following a complex crane lift to the chosen area. Furthermore, following commissioning of the chiller, Cooltherm were chosen as the primary service & maintenance provider.

CASE STUDY Factory Studios, Manchester
COOLING A MAJOR ARTS VENUE
Cooltherm was appointed to deliver a cooling solution for The Factory in Manchester – a major arts venue designed to host a diverse range of cultural events. This new space required comfortable conditions for performers and audiences, without compromising on energy efficiency or environmental impact. With an area of 143,000sq. ft, and a peak heigh of 21m, keeping the space cool posed a significant challenge. Furthermore, any equipment installed could not interrupt an audience’s enjoyment of a performance – nor should servicing impact the performance schedule.
In total, Cooltherm installed over 2.3MW of cooling capacity, through a combination of 3 Turbocor chillers and 1 dry air cooler. This solution was designed in-house by Cooltherm project managers to tackle the challenge of the cavernous space. Moreover, integrated noise attenuation devices guarantee that there is minimal acoustic disruption, even with the chillers and coolers at full operational capacity.
