Consistency, Compassion, and Results
THE BARB BELCHER WAY
When people ask me what has kept our firm steady through the years and what has allowed us to serve clients with consistency, compassion, and results, I always think of the people who show up every single day with dedication that cannot be taught. Barb Belcher has been one of those people. For more than two decades, Barb Belcher’s dedication, intelligence, and perseverance have helped fuel the growth and success of our firm. Barb is the heart and soul of our litigation team and I am grateful for the chance to showcase the remarkable work she does. Barb joined us back in May of 2003. At the time, she was still in school at Horry-Georgetown Tech, juggling coursework and an internship with Judge Hearn at the South Carolina Court of Appeals. As fate would have it, a fellow student mentioned that my former partner, Jill Fennell, was looking for help. Barb sent an email asking if we were hiring. That note changed the trajectory of her career and the firm. Looking back, it feels less like hiring and more like gaining a teammate we were always meant to have. Today, Barb serves as our Litigation Team Leader, a role that may seem straightforward until you consider the sheer scope of what she navigates each day. She ensures lawsuits are drafted, filed, and progress through the system on schedule, and oversees service of process. She guides our litigation paralegals, keeping them aligned, supported, and on task and shapes the quality and dependability of the work we deliver. Her talent for writing has long been one of her greatest assets. Barb is often the first set of hands on draft complaints, motions, and discovery requests before they are sent to an attorney for review. She approaches
every document with clarity, precision, and a genuine understanding of how the details matter. For her, drafting is all part of a larger commitment to presenting our clients’ stories truthfully and powerfully. One thing about Barb that has never changed is how deeply she cares for the people we serve. When you work in
personal injury, you meet individuals on some of the hardest days of their lives. Barb never forgets that. She wants them to receive every dollar they deserve, and she is mindful about keeping costs down so as much as possible goes back into their hands. Her dedication is not rooted in process but in empathy. Outside the office, Barb leads a life that reflects the same sense of duty and passion. Now living in Missouri, she volunteers with a search-and-rescue team that responds to missing-person cases within a 100-mile radius. They only deploy when called by a sheriff’s office, and when they go out, it is often into difficult terrain and high-stakes situations. Earlier this year, her team located a missing man who had been stranded in a cornfield for seven days and helped bring him home alive.
When she isn’t searching for missing persons, she’s running, quite a lot, in fact. She has completed a half Ironman, trains regularly, and loves unwinding with her dogs.
Her loyalty, intelligence, steadiness, and compassion have shaped this firm in ways most clients will never see but all benefit from. After more than 20 years together, I can say without hesitation that our firm is better because she is part of it.

Teens Behind the Wheel AWARENESS CAN SAVE LIVES
In South Carolina, the statistics are sobering. Teens here (ages 15–20) were involved in about 4.83 car accident deaths per 10,000 drivers during a recent two‑year period. One particularly terrifying metric claims that, on average, a teen‑driver collision in South Carolina kills or injures someone every 1.4 hours. So, why does National Teen Driving Awareness Month matter? Because awareness saves lives. It’s a chance for parents, teens, schools, and communities to talk and act before a crash becomes a tragedy. If you’re a parent or teen reading this, consider this month a wake-up call. Encourage safe driving habits: Always buckle up, avoid distractions (including putting down your phone), limit nighttime and unsupervised driving, and think twice before adding friends to the car. Every life saved means another story not cut short, and that makes January worth more than just a new beginning. It’s a commitment to safety, awareness, and care!
January is full of hope and excitement for a new chapter. It’s also more than just the start of a calendar year; it’s National Teen Driving Awareness Month, a moment to shine a spotlight on teen drivers, the risks they face, and how we can make the roads safer. Let’s start with some national context: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teen drivers (ages 16–19) are far more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than older, more experienced drivers. In fact, the fatal crash rate for this age group is nearly three times higher than for drivers 20 and older, per mile driven. In 2023 alone, about 3,048 teenagers ages 13–19 lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes, a dramatic reduction from decades ago, but still a heartbreaking toll. For every teen driver getting on the road for the first time, whether it’s running errands, driving to school, or heading to hang out with friends, this elevated risk looms. The dangers are especially high during the first months after getting a license, with the youngest drivers (around age 16) sandwiched between inexperience and ambition. Factors such as nighttime driving, peer passengers, inconsistent seatbelt use, and distractions (like texting) amplify the hazards.

Starting Line Smiles Surfside Turkey Trot Brings the Community Together
Solution on Page 4
The Surfside Turkey Trot is a tradition that captures the true spirit of Thanksgiving morning. Organized annually by the members of the Surfside Beach Rotary Club, it has become an incredible community event, and Maguire Law Firm is proud to have been the presenting sponsor for over a decade. While the race itself is fun, it’s the incredible range of people who lace up their running shoes that makes it worthwhile.
Slow Cooker Birria Tacos
With roughly 1,100 participants annually, the crowd includes everyone from energetic 9-year-olds to inspiring runners well into their 80s. It’s a nice reminder that movement, joy, and community have no age limit. This past Thanksgiving was no exception. Our team showed up early, eager to cheer, run, and soak up the atmosphere. There’s something infectious about the buzz at the starting line, with families laughing and neighbors greeting each other
