NCH William and Susan Dalton Oncology Unit Renovation Completed

N CH has unveiled its recently renovated Oncology Services unit at the NCH Baker Downtown Naples Hospital, and it’s all about the patients, their comfort, the comfort of their families and caregivers and the highest quality of medical treatment possible. “Twenty-one state-of-the-art private rooms are now equipped with everything needed to make a patient as comfortable as possible,” explained NCH Oncology Nursing Director, Suzanne Graziano, MSN, RN, ONC, NE-BC, CNAT. “For patients who may need longer term care, comfort is the key,” said Graziano. “The staff provided input for flooring, colors and other elements with the goal of creating a calming, healing environment that serves both the patients as well as caregivers.” The new rooms are considered “smart rooms” where patients can watch movies, view who is entering the room and control their own temperature and lighting preferences, said Carolyn Smith, BSN, RN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Manager, a 30-year veteran in the field of oncology. And each room is even equipped with a personal refrigerator. “We worked as a team to help design the unit,” explained Graziano. “It doesn’t have the traditional hospital feeling, and both staff and patients can feel the serenity and the tranquility.” To that end, Graziano said the unit includes a space called the Serenity Room, where patients, family and staff can take a relaxing interlude and experience peace of mind. The room features a large screen with a live video of Gulf beaches. Tranquil sunrise to sunset vistas are accompanied by soothing ocean sounds played through a sound system. The room is furnished with chairs, a table and a pair of comfortable recliners equipped with iPads®. A wall library provides educational materials, and there are separate areas for yoga or meditation and exercise equipment. The unit’s comprehensive oncology services include in-patient chemotherapy delivery, problem management and septic, neutropenic

and end-of-life care. An outpatient breast health navigator, OPIS (outpatient infusion services), occupational and physical therapy rehabilitation services and an oncology wellness program are also available. A cohesive, interdisciplinary staff includes a full-time oncology physician, Michelle Ramirez, MD, and oncologists from Florida Cancer Specialists, as well as an oncology pharmacologist. The team of 42 nurses include ten who are registered oncology nurses (nationally certified every four years) and nine oncology and chemotherapy registered nurses (certified every two years). “Now, we can care for patients in the most comfortable and advanced environment,” said Graziano. “The renovations have only been possible due to generous and loyal NCH donors, and we owe them special thanks and much gratitude.”
