easy grow guide petunia hang out (F1 Petunia pendula)

Plug Production: 288 plugs

Sowing/Media:

Use a well-drained, disease-free, peat-based plug medium with pH 5.5-5.8, EC <1.0 mmhos. No covering needed. Start with a high media moisture content and reduce once cotyledons are open. Media temperature should be 72-76°F (22-24°C), keep light levels <2500 f.c. Light benefits germination and daylength of 14 hours will improve seedling quality. Media temperature should be 68-72°F (20-22°C). Once cotyledons are fully open, dry the media down between irrigations to improve rooting, control floppiness and encourage even seedling growth. Keep light levels between 2500 and 3000 f.c. 14-hour day length is recommended using supplementary lighting if needed. Feed every other watering with 75-125ppm from a 15-5-15 or 17-5-17 fertiliser. Keep media pH at 5.5-5.8 (definitely <6.5 as this can cause nutrient deficiencies), EC 1.0-1.25 mmhos. Media temperature can be lowered to 65-68°F (18-20°C). Dry down between irrigations but avoid wilting. Keep light levels around 3000 f.c. Fertilize as per stage 3 to help tone seedlings before transplanting

Germination Stage 4:

Growing On to Finish: 4 ” (10.5cm) up to 6 ” (15cm) pots, 10-12 ” baskets (25-30cm)

Media:

Use a well-drained, disease free, peat-based growing mix with pH 5.5-5.8 and EC <1.5 mmhos. Avoid burying plugs to keep the crown of the plant out of the media. If growing for hanging baskets, transplant plugs directly into the basket for best results. Temperatures for growing on should be 68-70°F (20-21°C) day and 58-60°F (14-16°C) night (average daily temperature of 65°F/18°C) You can grow Hang Out at cooler temperatures such as an average daily temperature of 15°C, but it will delay flowering. Light levels should be 4000 - 6000 f.c. Hang Out is a facultative long day variety and will flower faster under >14-hour days; however it is less day length sensitive compared to many competing varieties and will flower under day lengths of just 10.5-11 hours. Practice a good wet/dry moisture cycle to control height and root growth. ‘ Growing on the dry side ’ , is a good natural growth regulator and will help to keep plants compact. Fertilise as needed with 125 – 175 ppm N from a 15-5-15, 17-5-17 or similar. Keep media pH 5.5-5.8, media EC 1.5 – 2.0 mmhos (saturated paste). As mentioned above, growing Petunias drier should help reduce the need for PGRs. Warm temperatures, low light levels and excess moisture will all promote stretching and vigorous growth. Good height control can be achieved with sprays of B-Nine (2500-3500 ppm) although it is best to avoid using B-Nine from bud formation onwards, as flower deformation can occur. Bonzi drenches (1-2 ppm) are a safer option from the bud formation stage onwards. It is best to run your own trials to avoid overdosing, as weather and cultural regimes can affect the requirements.

Pythium, Botrytis, Rhizoctonia. High pH >6.5 can cause yellowing of the upper leaves. Lack of fertilizer can cause lower leaves to turn purple or yellow.
