Firstly, a heartfelt thank you to our incredible Fundraising Committee for orchestrating a highly successful and well - attended Mother's and Special Friends Day. It was a beautiful celebration of the important women in our young people ’ s lives. Recognising and celebrating the role of women, whether mothers, grandmothers, aunties, or special friends, is vital. Their guidance, love, and support shape the lives of our students, and we are grateful for their presence and influence. We are so grateful with the Fundraising Committee ’ s efforts in bringing our school community together in ways that celebrate our College as a thriving community hub. The upcoming Trivia Night and Rhythm Revival concert will again see us all unite to celebrate our connections as a College community outside of the classroom environment. It is these occasions that allow us to weave a story and lasting memories that sit around your child ’ s day - to - day education. As we approach Education Support Staff Day on May 16th, I want to express our deep appreciation for the invaluable role our Education Support Staff play in the effective running of our College. Their dedication, compassion, and expertise have a significant impact on the education, wellbeing, and lives of our children and families. We honour and celebrate their contributions wholeheartedly. From the Intergration team to the Administration team, Wellbeing Support team, Instrumental Music team, Facilities team, and Technicians (IT, Science, Technology, Food and Library), we thank - you for all that you do and achieve as the backbone of support for our College and students. Furthermore, in the lead - up to IDAHOBIT day on May 17th, we emphasise the importance of celebrating diversity and inclusion within our school community. Affirming the identities of our LGBTIQA+ members—students, staff, and families—is crucial, and at The Lakes, we are firm in our allyship of this event.

Diversity and equity enrich our College and both are instrumental to our success as we nurture a community of learners who feel safe to express themselves, explore the world around them, and develop and grow in a global and ever - changing society. I am also pleased to announce opportunities for High - Ability Learners within our College. Entry and scholarship testing for the VIA program conducted over the last fortnight has provided avenues for curious and talented students to excel as they transition into Secondary education. Additionally, our partnership with the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) offers senior secondary students unique opportunities for advanced studies, preparing them for future academic pursuits and professional success.

EDUCATION WEEK

Education Week is an important celebration at our school, taking place from 13th - 17th May. This week - long event is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase and celebrate the incredible achievements, dedication, and innovation within our educational community. We invite all members of our community to join us in celebrating Education Week and to take part in the various activities and events planned. Let us come together to celebrate the joy of learning, the pursuit of knowledge, and the values that make our school community so special.

ATTENDANCE

Ensuring regular student attendance is paramount to academic success and overall wellbeing. Consistent attendance allows students to engage fully in classroom learning, develop important social skills, and build a strong foundation for future academic achievements. However, especially during the colder months, it's crucial to monitor illness and prioritise the health of our students and staff. Keeping children at home with explained absences when they are unwell not only helps prevent the spread of illnesses within the school community but also aids in their recovery and ensures they receive the rest and care they need to return to school ready to learn. By working together to prioritise both attendance and health, we create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive academically and stay well throughout the school year. Our transition to Compass has seen renewed attendance messages being sent home to families weekly. Please ensure you have access to Compass or via the Compass App to explain any unexplained absences for your child. As we transition to Compass, we are finding key tips and tricks along the way. One of the most important pieces of information we have become aware of is that if you access Compass only via the website, you will not receive notifications. We recommend that all families download the Compass app as this will ensure that you do not miss important notifications (messages, absence alerts, excursion forms, etc.) that are sent. At The Lakes South Morang College, we remain committed to fostering a nurturing, inclusive, and academically enriching environment for all our students. STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

YEAR 3 REFLECTION OLIVIA & KRISH YEAR 3 SRC

In Year 3, we have been learning all about different countries and cultures, comparing Australia to other places around the world. It has been so interesting to discover how people live, what they eat, and the traditions they celebrate in countries different from our own.

We have also been working on writing narratives, creating exciting stories to share with our families. We have learned that narratives are stories that have a beginning, middle, and end. We have explored different story elements such as characters, settings, and plots to make our narratives engaging and exciting. It has been so much fun to use our imaginations and put our ideas down on paper, knowing that our families will get to read our stories soon. We are looking forward to Thursday when families will come in to present their process of writing a narrative. It will be fun to see how everyone has worked hard to create their stories and to share them with each other. It's going to be a special day full of creativity and storytelling!

YEAR 10 REFLECTION HASTI & ZAF YEAR 10 SRC

The Year 10s have started the year off with a bang, especially with early entry VCE. Early - entry VCE has allowed students to get an insight of the upcoming years to come. It has prepared them for the challenges they will soon experience, and expanded their knowledge. Interschool sports for the year 10’ s was an exciting adventure as we learned to cooperate and learn to work well with each other. It was friendly but competitive games that enabled students to step outside of their comfort zone and follow their passions. On the 13 th of March, the year 10 dance and drama students had the opportunity to watch Wicked the Musical at the Regent theatre in CBD. This show was part of the drama student ’ s assessment task as they had to build a theatrical analysis of the play. In addition to this, the grand prix excursion was a day to remember as we were blown away with the high speeds at which formula 1 cars drove. Overall, it was an awesome experience for those who took the opportunity. We also cannot wait for the CHESS excursion which allows the VIA students to get a clear view of their possible futures and learn about their potential pathways. These terms have been memorable times for us all, and we must not take it for granted.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hello all,

As I write this, our Fundraising team is still buzzing from our Mother ’ s Day Breakfast last Friday! What an absolute awesome turnout for a first - time event to celebrate our mothers and special persons in our school community! To give an indication as to the turnout, we estimate over 250 plates of pancakes and 100 coffees were served! A massive thank you to all the mums, grandmothers and special persons who attended. A very special thank you also goes to our Fundraising team ’ s Briohny Voss for all of her organising and legwork in the days beforehand and to parent Grant Voss, Mr Panas, Mr Zull, Ms Spence and Ms Mackenzie who cooked up a storm on the BBQs, cooking hundreds of pancakes. A massive thank you to the many other staff who also helped towards the day from getting in early to help set up; helping out with the topping station; to taking photos, it is appreciated, and the Fundraising team are very thankful for your support. Lastly, I would also like to acknowledge Camp Australia for contributing towards the cost of supplying coffee to ensure it was free of charge to our families. This breakfast is an important step in further engaging our school community and strengthening school pride, both of which align with the core areas of focus in our Strategic Plan. I must also mention that we also had the most successful Mother ’ s Day stall ever on Wednesday 8 May. This year, Council approved to invest more money into the quality of gifts and that paid off with the most gifts ever purchased at the stall. The profit made will go back into the Fundraising revenue to spend on activities for our students. Thank you must go to Josie Benfari and Helen Skendaris who organise and run this stall and the Fathers Day stall each year.

In other news at School Council ’ s most recent meeting on 14 May, we:

• Were presented with a presentation on student literacy and numeracy data by our Leading Teachers in Teaching and Learning, Ms Short and Mr McLean. Our student growth rate and the increasing number of students achieving ‘ exceeding ’ results in these areas across the whole school is impressive and it is exciting to see how that growth/forward trajectory will continue in the future years. • Received an update on the status of our request for directional signage to be erected on Plenty Road as a wayfinding measure to our school; Merriang SDS; and the Collingwood English Language Centre. We are pleased to hear that signs will be placed along Plenty Road at both the Gordons Road and The Lakes Boulevard intersections. School Council acknowledges the work our administration staff have done in being in constant liaison with City of Whittlesea on this initiative. • Were presented with the results of the Department ’ s 2023 - 24 Agreed - Upon Procedures Audit on our school, as part of the Department ’ s Schools Financial Assurance Framework. In simple terms, this audit scrutinises the school ’ s finance procedures and processes. Our overall rating was deemed ‘ Acceptable ’, with some minor issues that have since been corrected.

Endorsed the school ’ s Confirmed Budget for 2024.

• Heard about a fantastic project our Koori students across the school are working on to celebrate and embed our Indigenous connections. DISCOVERY INTERVIEWS

Part of our plan to build Student Agency and Engagement at The Lakes is to give our students from Prep - 12 the opportunity to regularly share feedback about their learning experience and work collaboratively with staff to build a positive and successful learning environment for all. In Term 1 our secondary students completed discovery interviews to obtain important feedback about their learning experience so far this year. Survey questions were based around the following; the introduction of new walls and doors, learning tasks, what we are doing well as a school, areas we can improve on, what they believe good schools do, ideas and suggestions to improve student engagement, and suggestions on how we as a school can improve students overall learning experience. Following this, a selected group of student leaders from Year 7 - 12 worked with the Agency Team and collated all the feedback and presented the results to all staff. Student leaders also conducted specific workshops with small groups of staff. These workshops provided a great avenue for staff and students to work collaboratively and explore areas for improvement and possible solutions in order to enhance the learning experience for everyone at The Lakes.

Preparing students for senior school

Senior school communication and connectedness

On Primary our Year 6 captains recently engaged in a productive dialogue with our school staff, highlighting the various ways teachers have supported their learning journey. They shared their positive experiences, ranging from exciting camps and enriching excursions to engaging hands - on activities. Additionally, our student leaders expressed a keen interest in expanding curriculum opportunities to better align with students' passions and skill sets. To capture a comprehensive P - 6 perspective, they conducted a survey among students throughout the school and compiled their findings into a compelling video presentation for the staff. This collaborative session between staff and students was met with enthusiasm and served as a fantastic example of teamwork and shared vision.

Further feedback will be collected about students learning experience as Year 4 - 12 students will be completing the Attitudes to School Survey this Term.

LEARNING COACH SESSIONS

This Term students have been working on their passion projects and will present their final product at the end of Term. All students are currently reviewing and setting academic and wellbeing goals with their Learning Coach and these will be on Compass for parents/carers to view. Year 10’ s have also been working on preparing for Work Experience in Term 3.

There are many occasions during the school year where The Lakes South Morang College staff photograph, film or record students participating in school activities or events, for example: classroom activities, sports events, concerts, excursions, camps etc. We do this for many reasons including to celebrate student participation and achievement, showcase learning programs, document a student ’ s learning journey/camps/excursions/sports events, communicate with our parents/carers and school community in newsletters and on social media, College publications, etc. There may also be occasions where we take images to support student plans or to fulfil legal obligations, all the while compiling with the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic). The Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Consent Form is provided by The Lakes South Morang College at enrolment. Recent Departmental changes to this policy mean that this now only has to be completed once during your child ’ s educational journey at The Lakes. As a component of our transition to Compass, all families across the College will be sent a message on Compass or contacted by a member of staff in regards to Permission to Publish for your child provided at enrolment. If at any time parents/carers wish to give or withdraw their consent, they can by contacting the College or completing the form below. SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Youth Leaders Conference: Year 10 - 12 student leaders and Primary Leaders attended the conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre and engaged with inspirational young leaders including AFL footballers and young entrepreneurs. International Women ’ s Day Lunch: Four of our amazing young women were invited by our local State Member of Parliament the Hon Lily D ’ Ambrosio to attend an

International Women ’ s Day lunch at Parliament House. We were also very fortunate to have met with the Hon Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria and Leader of the Victorian Labor Party.

Y Lead conference: Some of our Year 9 student leaders will be attending the Y Lead conference at the end of May to work with other Year 9 leaders from across the state to develop their leadership and community engagement skills. Victoria Police: Later in Term 2 the Police will be running community awareness sessions with our Year 9 & 11 students.

PRODUCTIVE PATHWAYS

At The Lakes South Morang College, we believe in empowering students to explore their interests and prepare for successful futures. Here's a snapshot of our comprehensive pathway planning journey:

At Year 9, students begin their pathway planning journey with the commencement of electives, the development of Career Action Plans and Morrisby testing. These tools help students identify their strengths, interests, and potential career pathways, laying a strong foundation for their future choices. Our dedicated Careers subject allows students

to explore professions, develop resumes and the soft skills needed to excel – both at school and in the workforce, including: communication, teamwork, problem - solving, adaptability, time management, resilience, leadership, creativity, and conflict resolution.

At Year 10, students gain valuable real - world insights through Work Experience programs, Career Expos and Real - World Job Interviews. These practical, hands - on experiences allow them to explore various industries, develop essential skills, and make informed decisions about their future career paths - all critical steps in the career journey. Students participate in mock interviews, and personalised coaching to equip them with the confidence, communication skills, and interview etiquette needed to excel in real - world job interviews. To achieve this, they present themselves professionally, articulate their strengths, and demonstrate their readiness to thrive in the workplace. At the Senior School level , we offer Early - Entry Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs, providing students with opportunities to start their vocational training while still in school. Similarly, Early - Entry Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) options enable students to accelerate their academic journeys and pursue advanced studies aligned with their interests. School - based apprenticeships and traineeships are also offered at The Lakes, enabling valuable opportunities for students to combine their education with practical work experience, which allow them to gain industry - specific skills, earn qualifications, and build networks while completing their secondary education. School - based apprenticeships and traineeships provide a hands - on learning experience, preparing students for future careers and enhancing their employability. Our school works closely with industry partners to facilitate these opportunities, ensuring that students receive comprehensive training and support to succeed in their chosen fields.

As Year 12 students progress towards completion of their senior years, our dedicated team assists them in navigating the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) application process. We ensure that students are well - prepared to apply for tertiary education and make informed choices about their post - school pathways. Career Counseling throughout their senior years, sees students receive personalised career counseling and guidance, helping them explore career options, understand industry trends, and develop tailored pathways plans aligned with their aspirations.

Subject Selection plays a crucial role in shaping students' academic journeys and future career paths. When choosing subjects in the senior levels of schooling, it's essential to consider several factors. These include:

ATTENDANCE - EVERY DAY COUNTS

BELONGINGS, AMBULANCE & INSURANCE

If you are aware that your child will not be attending school due to illness or other circumstances, please contact either office to ensure our attendance records are accurate.

Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department of Education does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage. Parents and carers are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and carers of students who do not have student accident insurance/ ambulance cover are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/ transport and any other transport costs.

Ways of communicating absences include:

Placing a future Absence Request through the Compass Education Portal;

Calling the office;

Sending an SMS on 0427 226 537

As required by the Department of Education, all schools must notify parents/carer informing that their child is absent. Please inform the office of absences before 10:00 am each morning.

CSEF (CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND)

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps, and sporting activities.

It is important that funding made available in 2024 supports students to participate in school trips, camps, and sporting activities this year rather than being held for future years. This funding can also be used in conjunction with any funding accrued from previous years. If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. If you would like to apply for the first time, please contact the Primary Campus office on 9404 9000 or Secondary Campus office on 9401 3919 and ask for an application form. You can also download the form, and find out more about the program and eligibility, on the Department of Education and Training ’ s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund web page.

If you have a valid means - tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card, or Pensioner Concession Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families. Payment amounts this year are $150.00 for eligible primary school students and $250.00 for eligible secondary school students. Payments are made direct to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, and sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Foundation and Year 7 government school students who are CSEF recipients are also eligible for a uniform voucher. Schools are required to make applications on behalf of parents, so please register your interest at the school.

Check with the school office if you are unsure, and please return completed forms to the school office as soon as possible.
