Don’t Let the Holidays Derail Your Case HOW TO KEEP YOUR INJURY CASE ON TRACK WHEN THE HOLIDAYS HIT
The holidays are supposed to be a time for rest, family, and maybe a little too much pie, but if you’re in the middle of a personal injury or workers’ comp case, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. Between office closures, weather delays, and benefit interruptions, even small hiccups can create big headaches. I’ve seen it happen too many times, so let me share a few things I always tell my clients this time of year. First, get ahead on your prescriptions. If you’re on pain meds or any essential medication, get that refill now, not when you’re staring at an “Office Closed” sign. Trust me, nothing ruins Christmas dinner faster than realizing your pharmacy’s on break and you’re out of what keeps you moving. Second, keep a close eye on your budget. Banks and insurance offices close for the holidays, too, and that means your weekly workers’ comp check might not arrive on
schedule. A delay of even a few days can be stressful when you’re counting on that income, so plan ahead and set aside what you can. Next, let’s talk about appointments and severe weather. We live in the South, so the weather is unpredictable at best and downright mean at worst. If the roads turn to ice and you can’t make a medical appointment, pick up the phone and let them know. It only takes a minute, but it could save your case. A missed appointment without notice can look bad on paper, and the other side might try to spin it as “proof” you’re not as hurt as you say. Don’t give them the chance. Another big one: Get everything in writing. Don't rely on verbal promises, whether it’s a referral for an MRI or a new round of physical therapy. Ask for a written referral before you leave the office. It’s not about being pushy; it’s about ensuring your recovery stays on track and nothing slips through the cracks. And finally, be aware that surveillance can still happen during the holidays. Investigators know people are home more and may try to catch you doing something that contradicts your doctor’s restrictions. If your medical orders say no lifting, don’t risk your case (or your health) by hauling in the holiday decorations or shoveling snow. I know it’s tempting to do more when family and activity surround you, but this
is one time to take it easy and follow your treatment plan. I know none of this is the kind of warm, fuzzy holiday advice people expect, but it can save you a lot of stress and protect the progress you’ve made. So, while everyone else is making gift lists, make a checklist for yourself: prescriptions filled, appointments confirmed, money set aside, and your case protected. Then, once you handle all that, go ahead and enjoy the good stuff: family, friends, and maybe that extra cookie.

When ‘What If’ Won’t Quit
HIT PAUSE WHEN YOUR BRAIN WON’T STOP TALKING
We’ve all been there: lying awake at night, replaying conversations, imagining worst- case scenarios, or obsessing over things we can’t change. Overthinking might feel harmless, but when those thoughts keep circling, they can take a toll on your mood, energy, and overall well-being. So, how do you break the cycle? It starts with noticing what’s happening in your mind. Next time your thoughts go into overdrive, pause and ask yourself: What emotion is fueling this? Maybe it’s worry, guilt, or frustration. Recognizing the source is the first step toward loosening its grip. Turn down the mental volume. When your brain feels stuck on repeat, try redirecting your energy. Dive into a hobby, work out, learn a new recipe, or volunteer for a cause that matters to you. Shifting focus gives your mind a break and can help you feel more grounded.
Breathing exercises also work wonders. Place one hand on your heart, one on your belly, and take slow, steady breaths in and out through your nose. It’s simple, but it signals your body to relax and can help calm racing thoughts in just a few minutes.
Challenge your thoughts. Automatic negative thoughts (those instant, gloomy reactions) can trap you in “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios. Write them down, seek a more balanced perspective, and see if you can do anything about them. Taking small, thoughtful actions toward solutions can help quiet the mental noise. And remember, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Talking to a trusted friend or a therapist can give you a fresh outlook on managing those runaway thoughts.
The Most Dangerous Days of the Year Give Yourself the Greatest Gift and Arrive Home Safe This Holiday
Every holiday season, families lose loved ones to crashes involving impaired drivers, tragically, when people are meant to be celebrating together. That’s why December is recognized as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, with the weeks between Christmas and New Year’s Day consistently seeing some of the highest rates of fatal drunk driving crashes. In December 2022 alone, more than a thousand lives were lost to impaired driving, numbers not seen
in over 15 years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
most accidents happen within 10 miles of home, exactly where people feel most comfortable taking chances. The Right Call The safest decision you can make this season is to plan ahead. If you’re going out, line up a sober ride, grab a rideshare, or hand your keys to someone you trust. Hosts can make a life-saving difference by ensuring guests get home safely, even if that means holding onto car keys or calling a cab. The holidays should be about coming together, not tearing families apart. Every driver has the power to change the story and ensure the season ends in joy, not heartbreak. So, before you hit the road, pause, think, and make the wise choice. The greatest gift you can give is making it home safely and helping others do the same.
The Truth About Impairment Impaired driving isn’t just about alcohol. Prescription drugs, marijuana, and even over-the-counter medicines can slow reaction time, dull focus, and affect coordination behind the wheel. Add winter weather and holiday stress to the mix, and even minor lapses in judgment can turn deadly. Fatigue, emotional distractions, or rushing between celebrations can all create dangerous conditions long before alcohol ever enters the picture. The Myths That Keep Us Unsafe One of the most persistent myths is that coffee or fresh air can “sober you up.” They can’t. Only time allows alcohol to leave your system. Another false belief? Thinking a short drive means less risk. In reality,

When Holiday Parties Turn Risky Eggnog, Laughter … and Workers’ Comp?
Ah, the holiday office party: eggnog, ugly sweaters, and small talk. It’s the season to celebrate, but it’s also a surprisingly common time for slips, trips, and other “oops” moments that can land you in the hospital, or worse, trying to figure out if workers’ comp even applies. Know the rules before you toast. The truth is that liability is tricky when it comes to holiday office parties. Whether an injury at a company event is covered depends on the details (numerous details, in fact). Location, attendance expectations, and whether the company benefits from your
presence all matter. Every case is different, so there’s no singular answer, but a little awareness can save a lot of stress. Celebrate smart to stay safe. Yes, it’s a party, but think of it as a “festive workday” in disguise. Pace yourself with drinks, watch your step, and remember that winter evenings get dark early, making travel trickier. Even a short walk from the parking lot can be risky if you’re not paying attention. Don’t be that person. Doing something reckless while under the influence, like deciding to show off your breakdancing skills or tackling the office karaoke mic, can seriously hurt your chances if you ever need to file a claim. Workers’ comp looks closely at whether injuries happen “in the course and scope” of employment, and bad choices can make that claim much trickier. Know what to do when things go wrong. Even with the best planning, accidents happen. If you get hurt, don’t panic. Reach out to our team so we can guide you through the process, help you understand your rights, and make sure you don’t miss a beat while the holidays go on. The holidays are about fun, family, and a little festive mischief, but a little caution goes a long way. Celebrate safely, plan ahead, and enjoy the season without turning a cheerful night into a headache.
