Hurley Auctions 200+Years of history goes to auction at the Historic Fleming Farm in Greencastle

the first authorized regiment to be raised for the Civil War. The monument was erected in 1887 on the Fleming Farm in honor of Corporal Rihl by the Grand Army of the Republic. The Welch’s, direct descen- dants of the Fleming’s have continued on the family farm since the early 1800’s. Hurley Auctions will be holding a public online auction of rare antiques and local historic items from the home. Among the most prominent pieces is an early floral painted blan- ket chest which will surely garner intense interest from collectors, as well as many artifacts and pieces from over 200 years ago! Many of these local items have remained in the same family for over two centuries, including Boy Scout items from the Roaring Twenties, engravings and photos from the 1860s, dozens of books from the 19th and 20th cen- tury, antique clocks, collector trains, vintage furniture, and much more. This auction has something for any collector looking to grab a piece of U.S. history. One notable item, a painted blanket chest, is quite a collec- tor’s item, originally belonging to one Elizabeth Hollinger predating the 1800’s. Eliza- beth born in 1780 married one Peter Snively and later gave birth to their children Joseph and Mary. Interesting to note about the chest is the misspell- ing of the name: “Elisabeth Holinger” as it appears on the chest. This is due to the semi-literacy of some cabinet workers of the era. Even after all these years, the family still held onto items like an 1887 History of Frank- lin County, or “Life and Cam- paigns of Robert E. Lee” from 1866. Some of the earliest books date back to the first decade of the 1800s, and most are still in great condition. This family preserved these pieces of history for genera- tions upon generations. Farm is going to auction dur- ing Greencastle’s Old Home Week August 3-10, 2019. The Fleming Farm is well known as the sight where Corpo- ral William H. Rihl died on June 22, 1863 being the first Union Soldier killed north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
