Robinson DM, Tan CO, Tenforde AS. Functional Gains Using Radial and Combined Shockwave Therapy in the Management of Achilles Tendinopathy. J Foot Ankle Surg. 2022 Jan-Feb;61(1):99-103.
Retrospective cohort study. Data of 87 patients with Achilles tendinopathy refractory to exercise therapy were included for analysis. Mean duration of symptoms was 18 months. • 58 received RSW (12 crossed-over to combined group because of treatment failure or for additional improvement) • 29 received combined RSW + FSW. Results • There was signif. improvement of VISA-A score in both groups • The minimal clinically important difference (MCID - defined at 7 for insertional and 12 for non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy) was met in a greater proportion of patients treated with combined shockwave compared to radial shockwave.
Key message Combining FSW and RSW for Achilles tendinopathy provides better functional improvement than RSW alone
