Back to overview

Wheeler PC, Dudson C, Calver R. Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (rESWT) is not superior to "minimal-dose" rESWT for patients with chronic plantar fasciopathy; a double-blinded randomised controlled trial. Foot Ankle Surg. 2022 Dec;28(8):1356-1365.

Double-blind randomised controlled trial (level 1) 117 patients with chronic plantar fasciopathy (mean symptom duration: 32.6 months) were randomised to receive RSW treatment with Chattanooga Intelect RPW, either • 3 sessions (1x/wk for 3 weeks) of rESWT 2000 shocks, 10 Hz, max tolerable pressure (mean was around 3 bar) • 3 sessions (1x/wk for 3 weeks) of rESWT 500 shocks, 10 Hz, 1.4 bar All patients received a home exercise program. Pain and function were evaluated at baseline, 6 wk, 3m and 6m with patient questionnaire Results • All outcomes for pain, function and activity improved significantlyin both groups at all time points. • There was no signif. difference between the groups

Key message RSW treatment provided significant improvement of pain and function in patients with chronic plantar faciopathy, however there was no additional benefit of higher dosage (number of shocks and pressure) versus a minimal dosage.
