IMPROVEMENT REQUIRES REPETITION
THE LESSON I LEARNED FROM POP-A-SHOT
badly the first two or three shots I took. It wasn’t until the fifth, sixth, or seventh throws that I would start doing well.
Did you ever play arcade games when you were growing up? What was your favorite?
It dawned on me that life is like that in a lot of ways. Fitness is like that in a lot of ways, too. Those first couple of reps, those first couple of steps, and those first attempts may not go the way we want them to. Maybe it’s something we’ve done in the past that we were successful at, but now we aren’t as good as we were back then. With the Pop-A-Shot, knowing I had done well before, going in and not doing well at the beginning was always frustrating. It’s the same with most things we’ve done successfully in the past but haven’t done for a while. If we just keep putting in the reps, getting back up, and sticking with it, we’ll become successful and continue to move forward. We’ve seen it so many times with our clients. They come in, and they might struggle at first. Maybe they haven’t worked out in a long time. They used to be really strong and had great endurance, and it’s tough to not be at that level of fitness. If they keep coming, though, and stay the course, eventually they build strength and are successful at reaching their fitness goals. Life is like that. When we attempt anything, we might fail at first, but we have to keep going. We have to keep putting one foot in front of the other. That’s how you improve and make behavior a habit. That’s how you get the results you’re looking for.
Ever since I was a kid, every time I’ve gone into an arcade, I’ve been drawn to the Pop-A-Shot basketball game. During the quarantine, in between work and other tasks, I found I had a lot of time on my hands, and I started thinking about how much I used to love playing that game. I started to wonder if they sold them to consumers. Lo and behold, the actual Pop-A-Shot company does. You can buy them for your home, so I got one, and it’s now in my garage. I thought it would be fun. It’s turned out to be a great way to take little breaks in between work. I can step away for 10 minutes and go shoot some hoops, and I find I come back more focused and ready to tackle the next set of tasks.
What I started to notice as I was doing this is that every time I would go out there and shoot hoops, I would always do really
With that in mind, I’m going to go shoot some hoops!

Meals on Wheels doesn’t often get the credit it deserves. The international nonprofit ensures those who are unable to buy or make their own meals get the food they need to survive. Of course, for many recipients, the efforts of the organization go far beyond “survival.” For those who receive food daily or weekly, those deliveries may be their only source of social interaction. And during times of social distancing, the program became more important than ever. Meals on Wheels doesn’t just serve meals to the elderly and people with disabilities — it also serves those people’s pets. In 2019, Meals on Wheels Atlanta realized there was a huge need in their community to feed the pets of senior citizens. It stands to reason that if an elderly individual is unable to shop or cook for themselves, their pets may be in a similar predicament. And when someone’s pet is their entire world, making sure the animal is fed and healthy means everything. In response to this need, Meals on Wheels Atlanta began stocking up on cat and dog food, creating their own pantry to serve the local pet community. When volunteers made their rounds delivering meals to seniors, they made sure to bring cat and dog food along too. One volunteer with Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Larry Auberbach, had a unique experience delivering meals to Jeffery Jones and his dog, Grizzly. The volunteer told 11Alive News in Atlanta that Jeffery and Grizzly “have their own special relationship.” Larry loved Grizzly long before Meals on Wheels Atlanta started the pet pantry because he saw how much Grizzly’s companionship meant to Jeffery. Now, Larry enjoys his service that much more since he gets to provide for Jeffery’s beloved pet, as well. On top of delivering food to seniors and their pets, Meals on Wheels Atlanta also delivers pet toys and pet beds, and they are happy to take in any pet-related food or items for donation. The organization says this endeavor was done out of love, not only for the people they serve but also for the whole family — wagging tails, fuzzy whiskers, and all. Getting Healthy Starts With a Decision
Before starting Daphne Fit Body Forever, I was out of shape, overweight, and unmotivated to make needed health changes. Honestly, I just wasn’t sure where to go or what type of workout could possibly work for me because I had not worked out in years. Then, one day I was at my doctor’s office for my yearly exam. I remember being anxious that day because I knew we would be having a conversation about cholesterol and my weight. After that visit, I knew I had to do something about my health. The next time I was on Facebook is when “it” happened. I saw an ad for Fit Body Forever, and it jumped out to me. I made the decision right there to give it a try and drove there that very day to check it out! From day one, I enjoyed the workouts! While this was great, I still wasn’t totally satisfied with my results because I realized while I had started exercising, I hadn’t yet addressed my eating habits. I then learned that they offered nutritional coaching, and I decided to take part in it. I think that is what really sets this place apart because they offer a holistic approach and have nutritional coaching services. Through their nutritional coaching program, I’ve learned so much about nutrition and how to change for good. It’s been a game- changer! I am now in love with working out and can’t wait to be at the gym each day! I also understand nutrition so much better and what my body needs! Because of the coaching and support of Daphne Fit Body Forever, I’ve become a person who adores working out and also helping others with their journey as well. I love the support of all the members and coaches as we encourage each other on our own individual journeys. I am more coordinated, much stronger, and have greatly improved balance! I’ve also lost 25 pounds and many inches, and I’ve lowered my cholesterol by 50 points! I’m so grateful to the team of coaches at Daphne Fit Body Forever; it’s truly something special for those over 50 who want to get and stay healthy for years to come!

AN INTRODUCTION TO TURMERIC’S HEALTH BENEFITS The Power of the Golden Spice
People have raved about many superfoods over the past few decades, but one that’s garnered notable attention is turmeric. Fittingly known as the golden spice due to its orange-yellow hue, turmeric is famous for being a crucial part of Indian cuisine, ayurvedic medicine, and Chinese medicine. But does turmeric actually help people? And if so, how? Let’s start with the basics to find out. WHAT’S IN TURMERIC? First, it’s important to know what the spice contains and why researchers are so excited about it. Turmeric is packed with a chemical known as curcumin, which has been shown to provide anti-inflammatory effects, pain relief, antioxidants, and a decrease in the risk of cancer. Pro Tip: You should not consume excessive amounts of turmeric if you take medication that has blood-clotting effects, such as aspirin. However, a moderate amount typically doesn’t react with these or other medications and has many other benefits. CAN IT IMPROVE JOINT HEALTH? In many cases, yes! The Arthritis Foundation recommends taking a 400–600-milligram tablet of turmeric up to three times daily. Multiple studies cite turmeric’s ability to reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis pain, and one study even notes that turmeric
seemed to work just as well as ibuprofen (Advil) for people with arthritis in their knees. Participants in that study took 800 milligrams of turmeric every day. CAN IT HELP THE LIVER? Yes. One of the spice’s most notable characteristics is its powerful antioxidant abilities. Antioxidants play an important function in our bodies. The average person is exposed to refined and processed foods, smoking, environmental pollution, and chemicals found in pesticides and drugs. Turmeric can protect the liver from damage due to these toxins, which also aids those who take strong medications known to cause long-term liver damage. CAN IT DECREASE SYMPTOMS OF HAY FEVER AND DEPRESSION? Some symptoms, yes. The curcumin in turmeric can help reduce hay fever symptoms like sneezing, itching, runny nose, and congestion. When used in tandem with antidepressants, turmeric may help reduce symptoms of depression. There are many benefits to using turmeric in your weekly meal routine. Try out some Indian or Chinese recipes or prepare some Instagram-worthy golden milk. In whatever you make, enjoy the rich flavor combinations turmeric offers!

3 Fun Car Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy
3 ACTIVITIES TO KEEP YOUR KIDS BUSY IN THE CAR
SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD
ROAD TRIP BINGO This is a tried-and-true, classic car game that still entertains kids today. You can easily make your own bingo boards with squares to mark off for road signs, construction vehicles, and other roadside sights. Plus, this activity helps kids hone their observation skills. Having some treats ready as a prize for the first kid to get a bingo will ensure everyone wants to play along! DRY-ERASE ART Having art supplies in the car might keep your kids busy, but it can also mean dozens of crayons and colored pencils getting lost between the seat cushions. Instead, keep dry-erase boards and markers on hand for a safe art project without the clutter and mess. Plus, old plastic CD cases work as dry-erase boards! TOY AND BOOK BOX When the games and art projects don’t work, a box of picture books, toy cars, dolls, and other toys might prove to be the best defense against your kids’ boredom. While this fix might seem too easy, sometimes the simplest ideas work the best. Instead of having your kids play the quiet game the next time they’re acting up in the back, try some of these ideas to keep them entertained so you can keep your eyes safely on the road.
Your family might not be taking many road trips this summer, but keeping your kiddos occupied even on short trips in the car can sometimes feel impossible. Few vehicles have built-in entertainment systems, and truth be told, using a smartphone or iPad to address your kids’ boredom and antics might not be the best option, especially if you’re trying to cut down on their screen time. Fortunately, some of the activities that keep kids occupied on long road trips also work for quick trips around town. Before you reach for the nearest screen to keep your kids from picking on one another or finding unsafe ways of entertaining themselves, try some of these constructive car activities.
