Remembering My Favorite Books for Read Across America Day 26 LETTERS, INFINITE STORIES

Have you heard of Read Across America Day? If you

I wouldn’t trade that time out in nature for anything, but I’m definitely glad I got into reading as an adult. Today, most of what I read is nonfiction. I like that I can use books as a way to get inside the minds of people I admire and get mentorship from people I’ll probably never meet in person. It’s not very likely that I could sit on my couch

have young kids, then odds are you have. The gist of it is that every year on March 2 (which happens to be Dr. Seuss’s birthday), the National Education Association doubles down on its mission

at home with Warren Buffett or Elon Musk, for example, and hear their takes on life and business, but in reading their books, I get access to those insights. I think it’s really cool to learn from their mistakes, revel in their wins, and see what they’ve achieved without leaving my house. One of my all-time favorite books in that vein is “Poor Charlie’s Almanack” by Charlie Munger, one of Warren Buffet’s business partners. I loved reading about the lessons he learned over the years and finding out that while Buffet usually gets the spotlight, Munger is pulling strings behind the scenes. Apart from business books, I read a lot of biographies and autobiographies, but sometimes I’ll pick up a novel. One I really enjoyed was “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. It’s an incredible adventure story following a shepherd boy named Santiago as he travels to the Egpytian pyramids looking for treasure. I enjoyed the book’s theme about finding your own destiny and the importance it put on having the right mindset. It teaches that while things are going to be difficult sometimes and smack you in the face, what’s important is finding ways to grow from those setbacks and discover how they’re preparing you for the future. It’s pretty rare that I read a book without finding a golden nugget or two of truth I can take and implement in my own life. Books have helped me grow a lot personally and professionally over the years. Sometimes I’ll be reading a book, and realize the author’s journey mirrors something I’m struggling with in my own life. Seeing how they got out of their situation can help me pivot and get out of mine. Sometimes I think of the old saying, “Every book you’ve ever read is just a different combination of 26 letters,” and it blows my mind. It’s incredible how many journeys those 26 letters have taken me on! Next time you call the office to place an order, if you get me or my wife Marah on the phone, don’t hesitate to drop a book recommendation on us. We’re always looking for new reads.

to connect kids with books that will inform, inspire, and uplift them by hosting events

across the country. It’s a fantastic initiative and one I fully support as an avid reader.

Seeing the news about Read Across America Day this year reminded me of my own childhood. When I was a little kid and my parents still read to me at bedtime, the book “The Little Engine That Could” was on repeat at our house. I really liked the message behind it and how it showed the power of a positive mindset. Funnily enough, once I grew out of bedtime stories, I didn’t read much until I became an adult, except in school. We lived in the country, so I was always outside playing or working in the garden. It was basically your classic American childhood (back before video games took over).

When It Comes to THE F PATI

Improve Productivity by Cleaning Up Your Inbox IS EMAIL CLUTTER DRAGGING YOU DOWN? Do you cringe every time you open your email, preparing yourself for a barrage of unanswered messages? If so, then it’s time to take tidying up your inbox more seriously because poor organization results in far worse problems than simply missing out on happy hours with coworkers. According to psychology professor Susan Krauss Whitbourne, mental and physical clutter can impede productivity. It may also have long-term effects on our ability to process information. One University of Toronto researcher has even found evidence that mental clutter may worsen age-related memory loss. Since most people can cite their digital inbox as a source of stress, starting there is a big step toward organizing your mind and your life. Plus, you can declutter it in just one hour by following these steps.

Between warm weather, days at the beach, and Fourth of July fireworks, there isn’t much about summer to complain about — unless you’re a chiropractor. Then, you might already be dreading it because summer is flip-flop season, and flip-flops have notoriously bad arch support that can undermine your patients’ health. Drs. Kat Mayes and Tess Graf, the sisters who own and run Quintessential Chiropractic, faced that exact problem at their clinic in Chesterfield, Virginia. “We have a lot of patients who are wearing flip-flops eight months out of the year. If it doesn't drop below 32 degrees, they’re in flip-flops. We’ve seen issues with shin muscles being overly tight, arches dropping, and patients having hip and ankle issues because there’s no stability,” Dr. Graf explains. By spring, bad shoes were everywhere. The sisters wanted to find a shoe they could recommend to patients and have them change into when they came in for appointments, but it was easier said than done. As Dr. Graf puts it, most brands on the market “don't support anything but their manufacturers’ wallets.” Things looked bleak until Dr. Graf discovered the Australian shoe brand Archies through a Facebook post. Their stylish, semiorthotic flip-flop design was created by a physical therapist.

1. Sweep away the junk.

Begin by going through your emails from oldest to newest and deleting anything you know you won’t need. When you see an email you want to delete, search to find others from that sender — it’s likely there are multiple you can trash right away.

2. Categorize necessary messages.

Create folders to organize the remaining emails. You might use a time-based system, like “First Quarter of 2020,” or descriptive names, like “Receipts” and “Current Projects.” Choose a system that works for your personal preferences.

3. Respond to urgent emails.

Have unanswered emails that can’t be filed away? Use the two-minute rule: Immediately respond to anything that will take less than two minutes to answer. For the ones that need more effort, put them on your to-do list and schedule a time on your calendar to respond.

4. Maintain a healthy email habit.

Now that your inbox is in a manageable state, develop habits to keep it that way. Check your inbox when you get to work and follow the steps above. Once a week, set aside a few minutes to sort through and organize anything you missed. The more time you devote to decluttering your email first thing, the more time you’ll have to accomplish bigger and more important goals.

“We tried them out and were amazed,” Dr. Mayes says. “They have a very thick sole, so it’s nice and cushioned, and they have a negative heel cup that allows you to keep your weight over your heel and the back half of your foot rather than the ball.

Plus, it’s all one piece, so the toe strap won’t come out of the shoe!”

Meet One of Our Most Trusted Manufacturers PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: CORE PRODUCTS Here at Chiro1Source, we’re really proud of our strong relationships. We’ve worked with a lot of our suppliers, manufacturers, and clients for five, 10, or even 15 years, but one of our longest-standing partnerships is with theWisconsin-based manufacturer Core Products. Pretty much from day one, Core Products has been supplying us with high-quality, American- made necessities. Our founder, Dr. Cecil Walker, used their supplies in his own chiropractic practice, and we’ve been stocking them for more than 20 years. “Core Products originated mainly as a pillow company supplying orthopedic pillows to spinal health professionals, chiropractors, physical therapists, and others,” says Rob Cooper, Core Products’ director of sales and marketing. “Today, our product line includes orthopedic pillows, orthopedic braces and supports, and hot/cold therapy products.” One thing that makes Core Products unique is many of its devices started with chiropractors who call in to the company from across the country to share ideas. Core Products also tweaks and perfects products with advice from those same professionals. “Sometimes a chiropractor will call and say, ‘I love this pillow, but if you could add this or adjust this, it would make it even better,’” Rob says. “On many occasions, we take that feedback.” Early this year, Core Products worked with us to debut a brand-new product: the Apex Cervical Orthosis. It’s a neck support specifically designed to counter the negative forces caused by forward posture. ‘We chose Chiro1Source because of their reach and because they’re very quick to market our programs and new products,” Rob explains. “They’re very flexible in the way they do business. It’s not a big corporate structure where it takes us a year to

The sisters fell in love with the product, and because they’re longtime Chiro1Source customers, they suggested we stock it. After some back and forth with the Australian manufacturer, we had a stash of unisex Archies in multiple colors headed our way. Dr. Graf, who has previously been frustrated with Archies’ slow international shipping, was thrilled. “Now, hopefully when we order them, we’ll get them the next day!” she says. The Archies have arrived at our headquarters, and they’re ready to go. Visit our website today to learn more about this game changing shoe and give your patients access to the flip-flops they deserve!

get a new product added. They’re responsive to our needs as a manufacturer looking to bring new products and programs to the market they serve, and they’re good marketers!” We’re thrilled that Core Products chose us as one of their exclusive suppliers for the Apex Cervical Orthosis, and that we’ll get to work with them for many more years to come. The Flip-Flops Your Patients Deserve 2 Partner Spotlight: Core Products 3 Have You Heard These Myths About the Mediterranean Diet? 4

An Easy Way to Eat Healthier for Your Heart FACT VS. FICTION: THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

While the basis of the Mediterranean diet has been a staple in its titular region for

Myth No. 2: It’s expensive. False. You don’t have to eat only what’s native to the Mediterranean, so don’t swear off avocados just yet. Eat locally by choosing in-season fruits and vegetables that benefit your diet and your wallet. You’ll find that preparing meals centered on vegetables and whole grains is very affordable, especiallywhen you get your grains from dry bulk bins. And while buying olives and cheese might be expensive, you can get away with buying small amounts. Try different brands of canned olives for affordable alternatives to bottled ones. Plus, some grocery stores place cheap cuts of their premium cheeses near the deli. Myth No. 3: Nutritionally, it’s 30%–40% fat. True. But be careful about which type of fat. The Mediterranean diet relies heavily on olive oil instead of butter or lard for cooking. Saturated fats, trans fats, or hydrogenated fats like palm oil don’t contribute positively to your heart health, but a diet based on natural fats can improve your overall cholesterol levels. Fatty fish are also crucial for the Mediterranean diet and include salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, albacore, and lake trout. Thanks to omega-3 fatty acids, consumption of these fish improves your blood circulation and reduces inflammation in the body. If you’re concerned about your heart health, try out this plant-based diet with a focus on foods local to you for long-term health and delicious meals. Your bodywill thank you!

centuries, it wasn’t until the 1960s that nutritionists popularized the concept inWestern culture. Doctors noticed that Mediterranean countries like Greece and Italy have less heart disease-related deaths than the U.S. and northern Europe. When they looked to regional eating habits for answers, they found a common plant-based diet rich in healthy fats, seafood, and bread. However, in modern years, misconceptions plague the popular diet, so let’s clear some up. Myth No. 1: It’s rigid.

False. There are no defined portion sizes for the Mediterranean diet. Instead, it comes with a loose guideline: Eat a plant-based diet of mostly fruits and vegetables with a weekly intake of fish, poultry, beans, and eggs. Dairy products are allowed in conservative amounts, but nutritionists discourage red meat intake whenever possible. To the delight of many Mediterranean dieters, a moderate amount of red wine is encouraged!
