Archaeological Roadshow coming to Russell

Dr. Thibaudeau led the significant Casselman dig the past two summers, where Archaic Period artifacts collected numbered in the thousands. They hope residents will bring out items like arrowheads, spearheads, scrapers, pottery

shards, stone knives, grinding stones and worked flakes. This helps promote an understanding of the pre-European settlement periods. Although often called prehistory, the study of archaeology and oral histories have filled in many of the knowledge gaps and much is being learned about lives of the first peoples, from Palaeo-

Indian, Archaic periods, the more familiar Woodland peoples, and Algonquin nations. Both guests are willing to look at “found objects” from a known location, and at “old objects” passed down in a family and from an unknown location. So find those flint chips or arrowheads you stashed away— somewhere.

RUSSELL | The Russell Historical Society, in partnership with the Ontario Archaeological Society—Ottawa Chapter, is hosting an Archaeological Roadshow for artifacts found relating to the early peoples of this region. It will be held Saturday, May 12, venue to be confirmed. Two distinguished Canadian archaeologists will be on hand to identify artifacts. They will not be giving estimates of dollar values, but will try to determine age, use and makers of artifacts. Dr. Jean-Luc Pilon, Curator of Ontario Archaeology at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and Dr. Paul Thibaudeau, from Carleton University, will also bring some artifacts to show.
