We recall the words of Paul to the Christians at Philippi. Until experience makes them real to us, they may seem strange words: “For unto you. it is given [as a love gift] in behalf of Christ, not only to believe ón . him [great and precious as that privilege is] but also to suffer for his sake” (1:2?). Lord, let my love gift of suffering r—whether It be small or great—be offered without stint unto Thee, and with joy! the root of sin, and neither education nor legislation is an effective weapon for combating sin. Legislation may keep sin under control, and education may show the folly of it, but neither will annihilate nor destroy it. The battle against sin invariably calls for spiritual weapons, even as the Apostle suggested, “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:4). If we are to successfully rid our land of the curse of alcoholism,'^we must give to our American people the only proven remedy for curbing, the sinful appetites of the human heart; We must earnest ly and persuasively present unto them “the gospel of Christ” which alone is the “power of God unto salvation” (Rom. 1:16). We must convince our young people that they can be and must he “strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might,” if they are to be fortified, against the destructive forces which are endahgering society' today. The words in Ephesians 5:18 assure us that what the Spirit has to offer is far more satisfying, stimulating, ahd strengthening than the exhilarating effects of wine. “Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” -Jesus said, “He that believeth on me shall never thirst.” In 1 John 5:4 we read, “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that be lieveth that Jesus is the Son of God?” Let us note from our Scripture les son, as found in 2 Peter 1:5-9; that “faith” is the starting point in the de velopment of Christian ,character. We cannot expect men and women who are unbelievers to practice temperance. God’s order is: “add to your faith vir tue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance." It is evident, therefore, that faith, and faith alone, equips society with the weapons which at-e truly effective in combating the evils of alcohol. For the Leader Thè transformed lives of such men as Jerry McAuley and Mel Trotter pro vide substantial evidence to prove the power* of the gospel over alcohol. 14. The Boomerang “Let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is bom of God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7). In order to keep hate from creep ing into the heart, some Christians find it necessary to pray for the right kind of feeling toward those they do not like, or those who do not like them. It is said that hate never injured an enemy, but that it has ruined the life of many a hater. Therefore, for his own sake, a Christian must not allow hate a place in his life.—The Cumberland Presbyterian. 15. The Christian Watchman “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Cor. 16:13). A Christian should live in the ex pectancy of the Lord’s coming. It will keep us from idling away our time, and it will also safeguard, our personal conduct. The Lord Jesus has one great word for us at this time—watch. Watch wfhen the world rolls on in wicked ness ; watch when wily deceivers arise and subvert the Woifl of God;, watch when the hatred of the world in creases toward Christ; watch against the temptation to become careless and indifferent. Christ has.commanded it. Are you watching? —Northwestern Pilot. FAITH OF A JEWESS [ Continued from Page 295 ] God which is in Christ Jesus MY Lord’ (Rom. 8:38, 39).” It was with that triumphant testi mony that my beloved Miriam entered upon a long period of isolation and testing, the severity of which only God knows. She went, upheld by faith in that Almighty One from whom she could never be separated. So, too, may I enter upon every crushing experience of life; and so may you.
