Why This Football Season Means So Much to My Family
CHEERING ON ISAIAH IN HIS FINAL SEASON!
Football season is here, and with it, the end of an era. After 25 years of coaching, spectating, and playing Uber driver, it’s now the last year one of my kids will play competitive sports. This fall, Isaiah is finishing out his career as a long snapper for the University of Northern Iowa’s football team. I won’t lie — I’m definitely melancholy that my time as No. 1 Football Dad is almost over, but I couldn’t be prouder of my kids and their achievements over the years. Madisen, Malory, and Isaiah all played sports throughout school. Isaiah wrestled and played football while the girls focused on soccer, basketball, and gymnastics. You can’t imagine how much time Gina and I spent driving them to games and yelling ourselves hoarse from the bleachers. Each of my kids went to UNI, and so did my wife and I. I even played football when I was there, just like my son!
put our focus on Isaiah’s final season. While some might consider this a bit over the top, I know we’re doing the right thing. My wife and I always want to prioritize what’s important in our lives, and being a part of our children’s lives will always rank higher than anything else. I
Not only do I cherish the memories we’ve made throughout the years at games, practices, and tournaments, but also the impacts these sports have had on my kids as people.
doubt I’d ever think, “Oh man, remember when we babysat contractors while they remodeled the kitchen? Best fall ever!” But Gina and I will definitely talk about Isaiah’s best moves on the football field in years to come. Not only do I cherish the memories we’ve already made over years of games, practices, and tournaments, but I also love to see the impact sports have had on my kids as people. Getting up early for practice; drilling in rain, wind, and mud; and competing with other kids for the starting spot on the team has made them resilient, disciplined adults. Thanks to that healthy competition, they learned a lot about teamwork and picked up the skills to achieve their goals and ambitions. I can see these strengths in my daughter, Madisen, daily while we work together! Now, I’m sure you can see why you’ll find me at every Northern Iowa Panther football game this year. I’ll appreciate every moment of Isaiah’s final season, and I know the Panthers will be playoff contenders. If you catch one of their games, I hope you’ll cheer them on with me! –Darin Garman
The University ties us all together with a special bond as alumni and former athletes. It was a huge part of our lives, and we both feel lucky to be here for Isaiah through his final season. We’ve already worked out our schedules to make it to every home and away game, even the one in Pocatello, Idaho! This fall, we’ve decided to hold off on any home improvements, and I’ve denied a few invitations to different conferences in order to

HOW TO SECURE YOUR FINANCES IN UNSTABLE CONDITIONS World Tensions, High Investing
If you pay any attention to the news, you know things are not too great around the world right now. Tension is high and seems to be getting higher.
Sure, there is always something going on, of course, but it looks like things are continuing to escalate in many areas instead of dying down. I won’t go over everything here in this article.
If you are paying at least a little attention to the national news and world events, you know what I am talking about. Along the same lines …
The Federal Reserve is mulling yet another interest rate increase.
Now, depending on whom you believe, you may think this is an incredibly dumb decision knowing our nation is already in more debt than ever in its history, OR you may feel it is necessary and prudent decision-making.
But no matter which way you lean on this one thing, we can all agree on this:
Under all these national and international conditions, you’d better be investing and socking any investment money away or approaching your investing in a much different manner than you may have before in your life because this is different from anything else we have seen.
If you keep doing the same things you have been doing, you will get the same results. There are no more guarantees.
It used to be that if you saved money every month for 20–30 years, THEN you had made it. Or if you put your money in the bank (CD, money market, savings account, etc.), it would be entirely safe there no matter what happens.
This is why so many investors have joined me in owning apartment properties, specifically here in the agricultural belt of the U.S.
Sure, I know. I am in the real estate business, so I do have a vested interest in telling you this.
Sorry, not anymore. Just ask the hundreds of people I have talked to over the last few months. Let’s just say they are sorely disappointed.
Fortunately, you don’t need to have a master’s degree in economics to see the writing on the wall, and it’s actually good news because this writing tells you where to look for the places that increase your income and net worth. While everyone else clings to what “USED TO WORK,” you will be confident, comfortable, and powerful financially. It is easy to do your own research and see what I say is true. As we start moving toward the middle of the third quarter of this year and into more uncertainty, ensure you are REALLY on top of this — especially if others depend on you. Helping you to be proactive to produce more net worth and income for you … even in this economy … –Darin
My point to this is not to scare you or anything like that. I just want to make sure you are thinking about this. It’s important.
One thing you’d better do now is become very proactive with your “regular” money or your IRA/401(k) money and be thinking about where you should be investing, NOT because it’s the place you always have or always thought was the right place BUT BECAUSE of what may happen around you financially in the future.
Please read that long sentence again …
For example, among the list of what people will really need is housing. All things in someone’s life may go to the dogs, but one thing people will want and need is a place to live and as economically as possible.

Iowa’s rich sports history spans decades, even centuries, of talented athletes and unforgettable moments that had the world on its feet. Honestly, we have so many extraordinary moments in Iowan sports history that it’s nearly impossible to pick the top three. Fortunately for us, WHO 13 did the heavy lifting for us and created the Iowa Madness Tournament, a bracket where everyone could vote for the state’s best sports moment. And the top three winners are … DAN GABLE, WINNER OF OLYMPIC GOLD! The people have spoken, and the first place for Iowa’s greatest sports moment goes to Iowa wrestler Dan Gable winning the gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics! Born in Waterloo, Gable competed perfectly, sparing no points for his competitors and taking first place for the United States. Considered one of the best wrestlers in history, Gable was a well-oiled machine at the Munich Olympics, and the world was in shock at how he didn’t lose a single point throughout his six matches. KURT WARNER, A SUPER BOWL MVP An extremely close second place goes to Kurt Warner when he took the St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl XXXIV, won the championship, and was named MVP for the 1999 season. The final vote between Gable versus Warner’s sports moment was a close call, with 46% voting for the Super Bowl MVP, and for good reason. Hailing from Burlington, this Iowan was the first quarterback in the modern era to win NFL MVP in his first year as a starter. NILE KINNICK’S 1939 HEISMAN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH While many know athletes like Gable and Warner, every true Iowan should already know Nile Kinnick, the legendary halfback for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Aside from his incredible athletic talent, Kinnick was later a U.S. Navy aviator, and his Heisman acceptance speech became historic. “I thank God I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest and not on the battlefields of Europe. I can speak confidently and positively that the players of this country would much more, much rather struggle and fight to win a Heisman award than a Croix de Guerre.” Tragically, Nile Kinnick passed away in 1943 while serving in World War II. We will never forget his sportsmanship and bravery, along with this powerful acceptance speech.

Tradition vs. Time
THE NEW STANDING OVATION RULE IN MLB
When Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record and played in his 2,131st consecutive major league game, fans showered him with a 22-minute-long standing ovation. When Ichiro Suzuki walked off the field in the final game of his career, he, too, received a standing ovation. In his final game with the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez also got a big standing O. Standing ovations are a large part of baseball, as fans will spontaneously honor players for stellar careers, broken records, or incredible performances. However, sometimes, like in the 22-minute Cal Ripken ovation, they can consume a lot of game time.
the Los Angeles Dodgers stadium (his former team). After the ovation died down, Bellinger was forced to start his batting count 0-1. To be penalized with a strike for an ovation didn’t sit well, and it sent his fans into a complete uproar. Although the pitch clock is designed to keep games moving quickly with fewer interruptions and improve the baseball experience, fans were not entertained in this case. In an effort to improve the pace of the game and to include ovations, MLB teams are now required to submit a request 24 hours in advance for potential standing ovations to avoid a pitch clock violation. Now, teams and fans can celebrate these special moments of baseball’s past and present while keeping games on track. While this new rule seems cumbersome, MLB hopes it will help balance sometimes competing aspirations: improving the pace of the game while embracing the sport’s traditions of acknowledging great players. Teams will now do their best to predict when drawn- out ovations will occur and submit their requests on time. It’s a balancing act to keep everyone happy, celebrate the players, and honor the game’s history and milestones.
Early in the 2023 season, Chicago Cubs’ Cody Bellinger received a pitch clock violation because of his standing ovation from Dodgers fans for returning to
