LILI’S PLACE DEVELOPING STORIES

STORY X PHOTOS: GRACE MANNION

This August, the Kiwanis Club of South Lake held their groundbreaking for Lili’s place: an inclusive playground at Lake Felter Park. The project began with Lili, who became part of the Kiwanis family in 2016 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Lili sadly passed away in 2018, but her wish that she left for the community was to bring something beautiful that could unite families in situations like her own that were going through cancer with South Lake families. Her wish was to have a beautiful playground. She wanted a place where she could feel safe, be free from judgement, and simply be a child. So, in partnering with the City of Clermont as well as the Live Well Foundation, this dream was able to become a reality in Lake Felter Park. Every year, Kiwanis members lead over 1.3 million service projects and raise nearly 390 million dollars to support children, families, and communities all over the world. Every project is tailored to the specific needs of the community, whether it's building a playground for South Lake families, holding a celebrity golf tournament, providing medical equipment, filling backpacks with school supplies, restocking libraries, and so much more. Just one Kiwanis member has the capability to impact the lives of 106 children. The project is planned to later this year. The Kiwanis Playground Community, including Renee Lowe (Member of Kiwanis of South Lake), Nancy Wilkins (Kiwanis of South Lake President), and Mike Henleben (Board member of the Kiwanis Playground Committee), would like to give a special thanks to the city of Clermont for providing the space for the playground in addition to agreeing to maintain the park. They would also like to give a special shout out to Donna Kirkland and the Livewell Foundation for donating 100,000 dollars to the Kiwanis Club of South Lake in order to make this dream a reality.

MOVIES

AT THE MOVIES with Jimmy

STORY: JIMMY HERNANDEZ

Friendship (2025) Rated R - 1hr 41min Fans of “I Think You Should Leave” on Netflix will feel right at home with Craig Watterman (Tim Robinson), a marketing exec who leaves you dumbfounded with his awkward antics and lack of social decorum. When Craig meets his new neighbor Austin (played by Paul Rudd), his world flips on its axis as we are treated to a madcap deconstruction of male friendship and its baggage, or lack thereof. Directed by film newcomer Andrew DeYoung, this glance into the misleading and melancholy world of being a man with friends may surprise you. This new comedy is available now on Blu-Ray, and will simulcast its premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Friday, September 6th at 8pm ET.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) Rated G - 1hr 25min The world-famous British duo of Wallace and Gromit, originally made famous on television, make waves in their feature film debut, celebrating its 20th anniversary. Nick Park’s character-driven formula expands wonderfully to the feature film format, giving lovers of the iconic team more action and hilarity, as a thrilling love-letter to early horror is written. A perfect family film to introduce the art of stop-motion animation this Halloween season. Now available on Blu-Ray and for rent on your favorite digital platform.

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (2005) Rated PG - 1hr 17min This spooky (and often terrifying) animated feature from stop-motion legend Tim Burton is a perfect introduction to gothic horror, a genre many directors such as Guillermo del Toro have made famous in the years following Corpse Bride’s release. Full of lovable characters and somber performances from Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter, this often forgotten release was a passion project of Burton amidst his blockbuster attempts throughout the 2000s. This film is getting a very special 20th anniversary 4K remaster and steelbook release, arriving Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025. The film is also returning to theaters beginning Friday, October 10th.
