side competed in the Boys A grade and finished 4th after a very competitive season. The team also competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ team championships during tournament week. Five matches over two days saw the team compete well, win some individual matches but not an overall tie. College’s top player Thimeth Wijesinghe performed consistently well throughout the season. The top College squash side were unbeaten after seven matches in the season and went in to the final as top seed where they defeated Burnside A by 8–2 to claim the top Canterbury schools’ title. The team was James Luxon, Shyam Hari, Nant and Nont Prachuabmoh. The College D team won their final match to finish 3rd in the C Grade. Table tennis had a very successful season with three of the six teams claiming titles this year. In the top B grade, the College A team defeated Burnside to win the title, the B2 side won the B Grade Division 2 competition while the C3 side won the C Grade Division 2 Sec 2 competition when they defeated Aidanfield 9–0. Rugby The UC Championship saw the 1st XV play a full round robin of matches in the season and finish 5th on the table and narrowly miss out on a semi-final spot. The team went in to their final match of the round robin needing a bonus point win over Shirley Boys’ High School. Despite playing a great match and winning 15–10, the team fell one try short of securing 4th spot after round robin. One of the highlights of the season was the annual CBHS match on Upper in front of a full crowd which saw College claim a thrilling 28–27 win with Jack Jones scoring an outstanding try late in the game. The 1st XV finished the season with the annual Quad tournament in Nelson. Nelson College were this
year celebrating 150 years. College played Wanganui Collegiate in the opening match which they won 40–22 and faced Nelson in the final. College led at half-time 15–14 but were unable to maintain this and eventually went down 33–22 to hosts, Nelson. Fletcher Anderson and Fiti Sa were both selected for the New Zealand Barbarian U18 squad. The boys will join players from across the country at a high-performance camp to prepare for a one-off fixture on Friday 9 October – a fantastic opportunity at the end of their final season of secondary school rugby. College had seven teams competing in the local Metro competition over the winter. This year College had two underweight teams, along with teams in U14– U18 grades. The 2nd XV started the season off very well and were amongst the leaders in the grade but lost a few games late in the season, but still finished 4th to make the semi-finals. Against top seed St Bede’s College, the team fought hard but went down 12–0 in the match. The 14A and U13/14 U58kg teams both made their finals but neither team was able to come away with the spoils. Skiing College skiers were able to attend both the Canterbury Secondary School and South Island Secondary School championships this year and had another successful term as they defended both the individual and team titles at both events. In the CSS championships that were held at Mt Hutt, Tom Picton- Warlow was the fastest overall individual with Ned Botherway (3rd), Sam Willems (6th) and William Picton-Warlow (9th) all finishing in the top 10 and placing the College team in 1st place. At the SISS champs which were held at Cardrona, Tom Picton- Warlow completed the double by
winning the individual Giant Slalom and helping the College team to 1st place. The College team consisted of Tom, Luc Botherway, Sam Willems and William Picton-Warlow. In the individual competition Charles Lord was 9th and Bradley Shearer 11th. Other Sporting Achievements Recently Art Aitken travelled to Invercargill for the NZ Secondary School duathlon championships. Competing in the U14 individual grade, Art raced over a 2.6km run, 10.4km bike and 2.2 km run. Finishing the course in 37min 50sec, Art finished first in the U14 grade and two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor to claim a national title. Max Calvert is currently in the Canterbury development boxing team. He will be representing Canterbury for his weight division (under 50kg) in Rotorua against the Central North Island. Last year Max won the South Island Novice U50kg title and repeated this again in August when he defended his title. Zach May has been presented with the Canterbury Golf Men’s Junior golfer of the year. This is a wonderful award for Zach to recognise the success he has had this year. They include Canterbury Men’s Order of Merit – 2nd, Canterbury Men’s U19 Order of Merit – 1st, Canterbury Age Group Champs – 1st, NZ Golf Men’s U19 champs – 2nd, NZ Golf Men’s Strokeplay – top 10 finish.
