Faneuil Hall Marketplace Propsal
Faneuil Hall Marketplace: A Historical Center
At the heart of Boston lies Faneuil Hall, a hallmark in democracy and commerce. It’s been a meeting place through the years for practically everyone – from the founding fathers to hordes of tourists from around the world. The Marketplace now, however, is at a crossroads. While the landmark still attracts over 18 million visitors a year, it now has some competition. Areas of Boston, like the Seaport, have seen incredible growth and development in the past decades, revitalizing that area’s commerce and nightlife. We love Faneuil Hall. We want to see Faneuil Hall as lively as any other area in the City of Boston. We have a plan to not only introduce some wildly successful venues to the area, but we believe the influx of nightlife will foster surrounding growth, making Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market a destination to rival anything else in Boston, or across the country.
And it’s no laughing matter. Well, it kind of is…
Incubating Arts, Entertainment, and Live Comedy
For decades, the rotunda atop Quincy Market was home to an iconic comedy club that would bring in upwards of 1200 people a night. By leaving, that club served as an economic driver to all the surrounding businesses. By working to foster successful arts and entertainment programming again in that space, the City of Boston can look to revitalize that area, bringing in even more people than ever before. Ticketed, timed events bring people to the area early for dinner and drinks, and releases their audiences after the show. With an increased presence of people in the evening, the entire area becomes more vibrant, feeling energized, fun, and safe. In an age of streaming and digital entertainment options, we know the value of providing live events. People crave the experiential nature of live entertainment. And that’s where we come in…
Asylum Comedy: Who We Are, What We Do
Asylum Comedy is the parent company of Improv Asylum and Laugh Boston – two of the most successful comedy clubs in the history of a city that is known for comedy. Improv Asylum has lived on Hanover Street in the North End since 1998. We’ve entertained thousands of people each week with our unique blend of interactive improv comedy and satirical written sketches. We were nestled into the North End long before the Greenway made it easily accessible for people to find it. Laugh Boston was one of the first businesses in the Seaport, having just celebrated our 10th anniversary. With nationally touring headlining stand-up comedians as well as incubating the best of Boston’s homegrown talent, Laugh Boston is regularly regarded in the world of stand-up comedians as one of the best rooms to play in the country. And more importantly, the Asylum CoLab, a shared workspace for creatives and innovators, and home to our corporate headquarters, is located in Faneuil Hall Marketplace at 200 State Street.
Comedy Never Sleeps: A Night and Day Operation
But we’re not just a bunch of jokers, we’ve been able to leverage our success in producing live events to the corporate world as well. One of our more successful business lines is focused on team building and training organizations on effective communication. We use the collaborative tools of improv to show people what it takes to get people on the same page to move big ideas forward. We also teach classes to the general public, bringing in hundreds of students each week – from aspiring comedians to professionals looking to develop their confidence and presentation skills. And… we’ve also broken into a whole new business line with Asylum Tours, celebrating the City of Boston with comedic tour guides starting and ending their tours in Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Our (Not So Modest) Proposal
Asylum Comedy is looking to lead the collaboration between local businesses and the City of Boston to be able to build back Faneuil Hall Marketplace, bigger and better than ever before. We want the chance to be part of the legacy of this landmark by taking over those available spaces and bringing laughter back to an iconic building. By moving Improv Asylum and Laugh Boston to the opposite ends of the Quincy Market Rotunda, we would aim to do the same thing that we’ve done in the North End and Seaport: bring people together for a night out in neighborhoods they might not otherwise think to head to. We know the effects our businesses have on the surrounding areas. We’re an economic driver for any area. People come to our shows for a night out, and that includes dinner, drinks, dancing, parking, shopping and everything else we weren’t doing during the pandemic.
Let’s start the conversation about how we can do the same thing for Faneuil Hall.
