Developing Gloucestershire’s Cyber Generation

New IT and cyber facilities at Gloucestershire College

The UK has one of the most vibrant digital economies in the world, but unfortunately there is a skills gap when it comes to finding a workforce to match. Gloucestershire College is doing its bit to help fill that gap, especially when it comes to the significant developments happening with Cyber Central in Cheltenham. The land for the development has been secured and now the college is arming the first generation of people who will work there with the requisite skills. Partnering with the Chartered Institute for IT, Gloucestershire College offers digital apprenticeships in areas ranging from cyber security technologist and network engineering to software development. Cyber Security Associates is one company already benefitting from taking on cyber security apprentices.

“We’re excited to be helping develop the future cyber professionals that the industry so desperately needs.” Gloucestershire College has also agreed a venture with the University of the West of England to offer cyber degrees in Cheltenham from September 2020. The strengthened partnership between the two institutions will expand computing and cyber secutiy courses in a dedicated cyber training facility at the college’s Cheltenham campus. College principal Matthew Burgess said: “Recognising the national shortage in cyber skills, we are delighted to expand our current higher IT apprenticeships offering and cyber security degrees. “This is a transformational time for Cheltenham, as it cements itself as the cyber capital for the nation. “Cyber Central is a much-anticipated development for the county, and will attract more businesses to the area.

Dave Woodfine, Director at Cyber Security Associates, said: “Cyber Security Associates places a huge emphasis on retaining local talent within Gloucestershire.

At Gloucestershire College, we are committed to supporting Gloucestershire businesses with employee training and apprenticeships. “Our partnership with UWE will ensure that we can support organisations by providing a strong talent pipeline of highly- skilled individuals as we develop the next cyber generation” l For more information on IT and cyber security training to support your business, visit: glosapprenticeships.co.uk
