EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Hundreds of apprenticeships up for grabs
As we went to press, we checked with the Jobcentre in Gloucestershire – and they told us about hundreds of apprenticeships up for grabs in the county. And that is just the ones they know about. We were already thinking ahead to our next edition of Punchline-Gloucester.com where we will repeat last year’s themed edition – 50 Gloucestershire Apprenticeship Champions. “We currently have approximately 200 apprenticeships on offer through the Jobcentre,” said Di Haines, employer adviser and manager for the Department forWork and Pensions in Gloucestershire. “They are being offered by a really diverse range of Gloucestershire businesses – from Gloucestershire County Council and UCAS, to Superdry, Bamboo and Ringway. “They are a really good way into work” Certainly the last part of her quote we very much agree with. Last year our research, which saw us work with the likes of Gloucestershire College, GET (Gloucestershire Engineering Training), SGS College and Cirencester College, saw us showcase 50 businesses from across the county considered exemplary at offering apprenticeship training.
“The qualification they achieve represents academic study combined with vital practical skills and real hands-on experience and is far more useful to employers. “Young apprentices with an enquiring mind can go far, as they are usually receptive to new ideas and concepts, whilst they in turn can often provide businesses with a fresh perspective.” In featuring every one of the 50 firms last year, we also published how many apprenticeships they had up for grabs and were able to publicise leads on more than 260 – just at those companies. As we mentioned at the time, for those banging the drum of Gloucestershire 2050 and others talking loudly about keeping young people in the county and driving skills, this was our contribution. Of course, times change and since last year things have already moved on. And we plan to reflect that when we publish a new list in our next edition. We might even tackle the thorny issue of the Apprenticeship Levy. We know it doesn’t work for everyone l If you would like to be part of that, think your company deserves a mention, or would like to volunteer a name for the list, please contact us: andy@moosemarketingandpr.co.uk or telephone 01452 308781
Big and small – some multi-million pound plcs and some small businesses – all of them understood the value of investing in the next generation of talent. There were electronics and engineering firms, flooring, construction and fashion businesses, hairdressers, transport, energy, health and telecommunications companies. And more. As one employer said to us: “Apprenticeships are significant. They give candidates an invaluable opportunity to build their knowledge of the working world.
