What impressed our judge most was how he has adapted and taken advantage of opportunities to drive his business “working tirelessly”. “There is business going on all over his business. He can see an opportunity and boy does he grasp it. He’s not frightened of anything. If you want a picture of an entrepreneur in Gloucestershire - it is him”. Mr Gilder started the business in 1985 as an agricultural contractor, seeing an opportunity to buy and sell used farm machinery. As the business grew he bought his first truck, so he could offer a delivery service for the machinery, and drove it himself. In 1989, the business relocated to one of its current locations, Gretton Fields, and continued to grow and diversify , including shunting tug and tanker hire. 2002 saw the formal registering of ‘William Gilder Ltd’ and in 2004, with five trucks, 20 tugs and increased sales,William employed a transport manager to enable him to focus on looking for new business opportunities. In 2009 as part of the business’s ongoing commitment to quality and service, the company gained ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems accreditation.William Gilder Ltd continues to expand, and now includes industrial services and waste treatment provisions and facilities. It now offers a complete service to the construction industry and is rapidly gaining market share in the waste management and recycling sector and exploring the future of biomass energy. It is also well known for its skip hire. According to one of our judges, Alan Smith “is continuously creating, buying other business, taking risks”.
