It will lead to a completely different look to King’s Square and complement the work already underway at the King’s Walk Shopping Centre. Costa Coffee has already overhauled its store on the corner of the centre overlooking the square into a modern and sleek outlet, while Greggs is doubling the size of its King’s Walk store. German shoe brand Deichmann is set to open in HMV’s former slot in King’s Walk and there is set to be a big announcement over the next tenant of the old BHS outlet that fronts Eastgate Street. And with planning permission in for work to overhaul the façade of Clarence Street, the area will soon have a completely new and refreshed look fit for a 21st century city. Cllr James added: "After being talked about for a long time, the improvements in King's Square and King's Walk are becoming a reality. "We are already onsite in the King's Walk car park and in preparing some of the vacant units for new tenants and we'll soon be starting in the square itself. "With some major demolition taking place in the wider King's Quarter area in the new year, this part of the city centre will soon start to look very different. “People in Gloucester are proud of what has been achieved at the Docks and Quays, but want a city centre they can be proud of too. I completely understand that and I’m determined to deliver it” l
Deichmann was established in Essen, north west Germany in 1913 by Heinz-Horst Deichmann. The company is still 100 per cent owned by the Deichmann family. Its motto: ‘Well wir Shuhe lieben’ translates as ‘Because we love shoes’. It has 3,700 shops across 27 countries, 26 of which are in Europe, with one in the United States. The Gloucester store will be the 99th Deichmann shop to open in the UK. Across the globe, the Deichmann group employs around 40,000 staff. The Gloucester store will have 16 staff, including a full-time store manager. Deichmann’s annual revenues are in excess of € 5.8 billion.
