reputation as a ‘City for the Arts’ couldn’t be more ap- propriate and timely.” In his remarks Mayor Baraka said, “Newark is now viewed as one of the 10 most thriving arts communities in the nation.” MGA&D principal James Wisniewski , who managed the most recent renovation project, added, “As architects who helped craft previous downtown development plans in Newark, we are excited to be part of today’s initiatives to make arts and culture a driver for the future prosperity of the City’s downtown.” 

Graves Architecture & De- sign (MGA&D) has focused on revitalizing the city through ar- chitecture and the arts. Recipi- ent of a 2018 Downtown New Jersey Award, the recently completed renovation that re- opened the Museum’s historic front entrance demonstrates that even a seemingly small project can have a significant impact on the city’s downtown. The Museum received the Award on November 2, 2018 at the Downtown New Jersey Conference at New Jersey City University’s School of Business in Jersey City. The winning project features a new entrance sequence – an events plaza onWashington St., transparent Bamberger En- trance, and a distinctive ramp – improves the streetscape and draws people to the area. Inside, visitor orientation and renovated galleries reinforce the Museum’s contribution to the cultural, social and eco- nomic vitality of Newark.

The project involved multiple community, city and state preservation groups, generat- ing widespread recognition of its importance for a revitalized downtown. Earlier this year, MGA&D received the Museum’s presti- gious John Cotton Dana Com- memorative Medal Award. Dana, then Newark’s City Li- brarian, founded the Museum with the mission of contribut- ing to the educational, social and civic wellbeing of Newark’s citizens. “Today, of course, it’s well known that arts-based solutions also drive economic development,” said Karen Nichols, FAIA , principal of
