Where Safety Culture Feels REAL EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP
I started my career at a trade school for heavy equipment maintenance and operations, which led me to work as an equipment operator in the oil fields. From there, I moved into general construction and spent a few years doing track maintenance with Union Pacific Railroad. Boy, do I have some stories ... Every job had its own safety culture — some stronger than others. In the oil fields, safety measures often felt reactive. When the White Hats hit the guard shack, everyone’s phones would start buzzing, and those were the only times we would shut down due to extreme heat. In commercial framing, safety visits were more about the free food than real engagement. Working for Franklin was an adjustment for me. I struggled with peer-to-peer correction, just trying to get ’er done. It all seemed genuine, so I embraced it and got on board.
I left Franklin briefly to work for a tower crane outfit, which took me to commercial job sites across the Northwest. One job led by an employee-owned general contractor stood out. It was the cleanest, most organized job site I had ever seen, and it made me miss Franklin. I missed peer-to- peer collaboration on safety and continuous improvement. I missed feeling safe! More than anything, I missed the culture — one that even customers can feel — which is why Franklin has earned the reputation of being “The Professional Framer’s” lumberyard. For those of us who’ve grown up blue collar, we know how good we have it as employee- owners, and we want to pass that along to new employees. We reinforce our culture when we take a picture of something that bugs us and share the improvement across the company. It’s great when a veteran driver taps a yard guy on the sly about
something silly in the yard, but we don’t have to hide that kind of culture from each other! We scan the QR codes, take pictures, share improvements, and participate openly and honestly in safety huddles. Let’s fully embrace the employee-ownership culture and make our work safer, easier, and more enjoyable as we work together to build a world-class safety culture.
