A CAREER BUILT ON COMPASSION Meet Alana Polk, Tittle & Perlmuter’s Dedicated Intake Specialist

When I joined Tittle & Perlmuter in October 2022, I knew I was stepping into a place where I could make a difference. As an Intake Specialist, my role is all about helping to guide clients through some of life’s most challenging moments, making sure they feel heard, supported, and confident about the process ahead. As someone who is deeply empathetic, I have found a perfect fit at a firm preparing me for my future goals as a therapist. From day one, I’ve felt the impact of our work here, and I’m grateful to be a part of a team that genuinely cares about our clients and each other. I’m the first touchpoint for any clients who call in — a friendly voice who listens and assesses the basics of the case. My job is to determine if a case fits within the scope of our practice and then move the client through the process so they can speak with an attorney. This role requires a lot of empathy and understanding because many people reaching out to us have just experienced a hardship. It might be as traumatic as falling victim to medical malpractice or seeing a family member suffer due to nursing home neglect. Whatever our clients are facing, it’s a reminder that in just an instant, this could be you or your loved one. Sometimes, even if we can’t help them directly, offering a compassionate ear can make all the difference.

I got my first introduction to the legal world through my high school’s work- study program that required students to spend one day of the week working at a local business. I was assigned to a law firm and spent all four years with them. I quickly realized I like the office setting and working alongside an attorney. Once I graduated, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career-wise, but I sought another law firm because I enjoyed the experience. I went on to work for a bankruptcy law firm, and eventually, one of the attorneys told me about the position at Tittle & Perlmuter. It was an opportunity to expand my knowledge in law, and even though I was initially unsure, I decided to take the chance and apply. I immediately felt at home with one of the most close-knit group of coworkers I’ve ever had. We got to know each other personally, and every person has taught me so much about life and the profession. The clients I encounter here have fascinating stories, and working with them has given me insights into the struggles people face during personal injury cases. My work is gratifying because I live to help others. It’s wonderful to guide someone and practice my active listening skills. I dream of one day becoming a therapist and attending school to earn my bachelor’s degree in behavioral health. So, this role has been an invaluable opportunity to hone my skills for connecting with people and helping them through life’s challenges. On top of preparing for school and working at the firm, I’m in the middle of planning my wedding and caring for my new baby boy. So, these days, I don’t have much free time as a mom and a fiancée. In those moments when I’m not doing homework, you can find me resting and catching up on a nice, twisty thriller or a reality TV show. I make maintaining balance easier by eating healthy, using my planner, and taking the critical time to exercise and stay level-headed. I’m grateful to work for a firm that genuinely cares about its clients and us, the employees. Having a team that supports me professionally and personally makes all the difference, and I can’t imagine a better place to grow, learn, and make an impact every day.

MANAGING ANXIETY IN MIDLIFE

Simple Solutions for a Calmer Mind

As we age, life’s demands shift in ways that can heighten anxiety. Many older adults navigate significant changes — increased career demands, aging parents, and chronic health conditions. Hormonal shifts associated with aging, especially among women, can also amplify stress and unease. Common symptoms include irritability and panic, insomnia, trouble with memory and focus, and digestion problems. Fortunately, there are strategies to help you regain control and maintain your well-being.

STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. Physical activity releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress. Activities like walking, swimming, and tai chi can be ideal for older adults, as they are gentle on the body while providing mental health benefits. Aim for 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. MAINTAIN SOCIAL CONNECTIONS. Strong social ties are one of the most significant predictors of contentment. Reaching out to

friends, family, and community groups reduces feelings of isolation and can help manage anxiety. Consider joining a book club, taking a class, or volunteering — these help foster meaningful connections while keeping your mind engaged. SEEK PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT. If anxiety feels unmanageable, speaking with a therapist or counselor can help. Cognitive behavioral therapy is beneficial for anxiety, as it enables you to identify and reframe negative thought patterns. In some cases, a medical provider can prescribe helpful medication. Experiencing anxiety in your 50s and 60s is more common than you think, but it’s also manageable. Taking proactive steps today can lead to a calmer, more confident tomorrow.

PRACTICE MINDFULNESS AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES.

Mindfulness techniques encourage you to focus on the present moment, which can counteract racing thoughts and reduce feelings of worry. Mindfulness-based practices include meditation, deep breathing, and yoga. Even a few minutes of daily practice can make a big difference.

When the kids leave the nest, you may find yourself with a lot of space — and a golden opportunity to create a home that reflects your current lifestyle and passions. Those empty rooms don’t have to gather dust; you can turn them into something that sparks joy for you. For years, your home has been the headquarters of science projects, sleepovers, and snack raids, but now it’s time to make those rooms work as hard for you as you’ve worked raising your children. With these ideas, you can transform your newly emptied nest into almost anything! A HOBBY ROOM OR HOME GYM Are you an artist at heart? Maybe you’re getting into a new craft or activity. Have you always wanted to improve your health but can’t stand going to the gym? Now is the perfect opportunity to turn your child’s old room into a hobby haven or workout station. It doesn’t matter what your passions are; this can be a space dedicated to improving yourself and getting creative. You can install vertical shelving to store all the supplies you need for your craft and hang up artwork that inspires you. To create a home gym, clear space in the center of the room for an exercise mat and add workout equipment over time. Time to Transform Your Space Into Something Special! EMPTY ROOMS, FULL POTENTIAL

A FUN SPACE FOR ENTERTAINING Just because your little ones have grown up doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun and unleash your inner child. You could create a home movie theater with comfy recliner chairs and a big-screen TV or projector. These changes make movie night special, rather than just another typical night in the living room. Stock it with your favorite snacks, a popcorn machine, and warm blankets. If movies aren’t your thing, you could instead turn it into an entertainment room where your grandchildren can play on an inviting rug, or you can host friends in a relaxing seating area. So, whether you’re flexing your creativity or your muscles, those empty rooms have plenty of potential and space for you to explore your passions. Feather your empty nest with fun, fitness, and a little flair.

4. Mastering the Art of Nature Photography

CAPTURE NATURE’S BEAUTY LIKE A PRO

Quick Tips for Better Outdoor Photos

Nature photography offers a great way to get outside and capture the beauty of the natural world. Whether you’re new to this hobby or have been snapping photos for years, you can always enhance your skills with these four tips for producing compelling outdoor photos. PLAN AHEAD Before heading outside with your camera and other gear, research your chosen location and the subject you aim to photograph. Understanding the local wildlife, plant life, and weather conditions can inform your equipment selection. Timing is also key. Early morning and late afternoon, known as the “golden hours,” offer soft, diffused light that enhances natural scenes. MASTER YOUR EQUIPMENT Be sure to familiarize yourself with your camera’s settings. Some of the most important include aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, which control exposure and depth of field. For instance, a wide aperture (low f-stop) can help create a shallow

depth of field and isolate your subject from the background, which is particularly effective for wildlife photography. Conversely, a narrow aperture (high f-stop) is ideal for landscape shots because it increases the depth of field and helps keep more of the scene in focus. CONSIDER COMPOSITION In photography, composition is key. When taking nature photographs, apply compositional rules such as the rule of thirds (placing subjects off-center), leading lines (guiding the eye with pathways or rivers), and framing (using natural elements to highlight the subject). Experimenting with different perspectives and angles can also add depth to your photos. BE RESPECTFUL Whenever you’re out in the field, respect the environment by following local guidelines, maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, and minimizing your impact on natural habitats. Always stay on designated paths and never

remove any natural objects. Following a few simple rules protects wildlife and the landscape and maintains the integrity of your photography. With these tips in mind, you’re ready to enjoy the outdoors while capturing images that reflect the beauty of the natural world.
