‘The Power of One More’ Changed My Outlook on Life Read This Book Over the Holidays!

I don’t stay up late to read very often, but when I bought Ed Mylett’s

When Ed was 15, his dad finally got sober and stayed sober for more than 30 years. After that, he was more of an inspiration than a curse. In the book, Ed writes about asking his dad, “Are you going to stop drinking forever?” His dad replied, “I’m going to do it for one more day.” “One more” became Ed’s mantra and eventually the book’s title. His dad recently passed away, but Ed still brings his mantra to everything he does. When he works out, he pushes himself to do one more rep. At the sales desk, he convinces himself to make one more call. He’s always fighting to record one more podcast or write for one more hour. Ed also asks other questions in the book that hit home for me: What would you do if you just had one more day? How would you live your life? What is really important? He talks about the value of living in the moment and being present with the people you love. Reading “The Power of One More” inspired me so much that I bought copies for the whole Chiro1Source team. I asked them all to read it and report back with two things they learned. Hopefully, the book helps all of us work a little harder and be a little more present. I’ve been working on that myself at home. Instead of answering work emails during dinner or while I’m playing with Bennett, I try to set my phone aside and be present with him and Marah. I highly recommend checking out “The Power of One More,” Ed’s YouTube channel, and his podcast, “The Ed Mylett Show.” I think “The Ed Mylett Show” is the best business podcast out there. Ed interviews people at the top of their game in various industries, including sports, science, politics, and business. I always learn a lot when I listen to Ed, and I love that even though he’s a big, super-jacked, masculine guy, he’s really in touch with his emotions and empathetic to people around him. Once on the podcast, he joked that he makes his family take an IQ test every year, and his IQ is always the lowest. “But,” he said, “at least I know how to connect with people.” Which of those two things is actually more important? Do yourself a favor and pick up “The Power of One More” if you’re looking for something to read over the holidays. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Ed Mylett is a super-successful businessman. He’s one of my favorite podcasters, authors, and YouTube personalities. But as a kid, he was a totally different person. He was trapped in a house with his alcoholic father for 15 years.

Ed wrote that when his dad had a bad day at work, he’d go straight to the liquor cabinet when he got home and start taking shots — unless Ed managed to distract him and put him in a better mood. Those terrifying nights taught Ed how to read people in seconds and shift their state of mind. He honed his emotional intelligence and talent for persuasion, both of which made him a great businessman and speaker down the road.

STAYING ACTIVE IN COLD WEATHER Come Out and Play Winter is almost here, and as the weather gets colder, many people use it as an excuse to stay inside and on the couch. But if you don’t want to wonder what happened to your fitness goals when spring comes around, now is the time to start preparing. Here’s what you need to know to comfortably enjoy outdoor exercise in low temperatures.

A few months ago, we embarked on a family adventure to a little goat farm about an hour away from our house. Supposedly, we made the trip for Bennett, but I think Marah had almost as much fun as he did petting the goats and playing with the farm’s Flemish giant rabbits. On our way home, we stopped for a smoothie in Durham, North Carolina — and a sign caught my eye.

First, there’s good news: Your chance of frostbite in 5 degree F weather is less than 5%. So, outdoor exercise is perfectly safe most days of the year. Just stay inside when

there’s a particularly nasty wind chill and don’t exercise on icy surfaces. But while you probably won’t be hurt by outdoor winter exercise, there’s no denying it can be unpleasant if you aren’t prepared.

“Pedego Electric Bikes,” it read. Rows of bikes filled the sidewalk outside of the shop and glinted in the sun. I couldn’t resist; I had to walk over and check them out! Right away, a staff member showed up to greet me. His name was Aaron, and over the next hour or so, he and the rest of the Pedego team blew me away with their customer service. Not only did Aaron answer every single question I had about electric bikes, but he also went above and beyond to help us entertain Bennett during the sales process.

One school of thought suggests there’s no bad weather, only poorly chosen clothing. So, if you want to exercise outdoors in the winter, you must set yourself up

for success with the proper gear. Dress in layers and put them on in the correct order. Opt for a moisture-wicking material as your bottom layer, then add

a warm insulating layer, followed by a wind and water-resistant jacket on top. Remove items

Bennett was toddling all over the shop, touching every bike he could reach and digging into the Burt’s Bees samples near the register. Aaron gave him a football and a keychain to play with while he showed me Pedego’s mountain, cruiser- style, and road bikes. I picked out The Avenue for myself, a City Commuter for Marah, and a SUNLITE Child Carrier for Bennett — who suddenly needed a diaper change. The Pedego team didn’t bat an eye. They whipped out a mat and let us change him right there in the back of the shop.

Another way to keep yourself comfortable during an outdoor workout is to warm up longer before beginning. Exercise in cold weather makes strains and sprains more likely, and a warmup will keep you safer. Plus, the additional movement before heading outdoors will help the temperature change feel less jarring. You’ll want to protect your skin from the harsh air. One of the best ways to do that is by staying hydrated. Though it sounds obvious, many people feel less thirsty when exercising in the cold and don’t drink enough water. Also, moisturize regularly and protect your nostrils and lips from the wind with petroleum jelly or Carmex. Finally, don’t forget the sunscreen — if skiers can get a sunburn, so can you!

While we checked out, the team even invited Bennett into their bike service area. The little guy loves tools, and within a few minutes, he was “helping” Aaron put together his new bike carrier. It was adorable! Marah and I left the shop with huge smiles on our faces. On the way out the door, it hit me: I’d just happily bought bikes I didn’t strictly need — all because Aaron and the Pedego team made it so easy. Their customer service was impeccable! I love supporting small businesses anyway, but in this case, I was particularly happy to do it because the whole team seemed to love their work. Later on, I called Aaron up to ask about his customer service philosophy. “We want everyone who comes in to feel comfortable and not overwhelmed,” he explained. “We have so many different styles and options for our bikes it can be overwhelming [if you’re not part of the bike industry]. The last thing we want is for someone to feel like they’re swimming in the deep end of the pool.” Aaron added that he wanted to “make the experience as fun as possible” for Bennett, just like he did for us. Aaron also explained that the Durham Pedego is a locally owned franchise of the larger Pedego Electric Bikes brand. It has 215 stores across the country that rent, sell, and service electric bikes — and I definitely recommend checking out a shop near you for excellent customer service. Working with Aaron reminded me just how important that service can be. If you struggle to upsell patients in your clinic or push products, take a look at your team. Are they on Aaron’s level? If not, put in the work to get them there. It could earn you thousands of extra dollars in revenue.

During the spring, the southwest part of England hosts one of the strangest sports each year — cheese rolling. People worldwide travel to watch and participate as contestants launch themselves down a hill in pursuit of a round of cheese. But how did this sport come to be? It’s kind of a mystery. No one really knows the origins of cheese rolling. For as long as the locals can remember, the sport has always been there. Several theories attempt to explain how the sport came about. One theory states that the competition started in the 15th century, and racing down the hill was a way to establish grazing rights on the commons. Others say the game has a pagan origin, where people would throw bundles of brushwood down the hill to represent the new year once winter ends. Although its roots are unknown, locals have kept
