Under a new regulatory climate made possible by new safety and engineering standards signed into law in 2016, the FAA is creating an environment that will likely double the safety while reducing the costs of bringing aircraft R&D efforts through certification and into the marketplace. For the aviation industry and the Eagle Flight Research Center (EFRC), which helped develop these new standards, it is the beginning of a new era of technological revolution. With such a favorable regulatory environment, the EFRC anticipates an upsurge of start-ups moving into the aviation space, creating disruptive technologies that will change the way we fly—including electric and hybrid propulsion, rapid prototyping, real-time simulation and modeling, mobile applications, autonomous aircraft and several others within the EFRC’s focus areas. The EFRC is ideally positioned to play a key role in this revolution. With our unique research expertise and design- build-test capabilities all under one roof, we will be able to attract those hi-tech start-ups that are looking to advance their aerospace vehicle innovations to commercial application. The university has dedicated significant resources to the Applied Aviation and Engineering Research Hangar, but additional costs remain to build and equip a facility that can leverage the growing availability of partnership opportunities in the region. In light of this need, Embry-Riddle requests $2.5 million in matching funds to help construct and equip the Applied Aviation and Engineering Research Hangar in its new research park. Support for this vital project will transform the region by enabling the university to: •Drive research investment in Florida and attract companies to the area, stimulating economic growth •Establish Central Florida as an aviation and aerospace innovation region •Expose graduate students to a solutions-oriented, applied learning environment that prepares them to lead innovation in their chosen professions We will also consistently provide tech-ready, graduate-level talent to the industry, creating the workforce for Florida’s future.

SERVING THE NEEDS OF INDUSTRY

Airbus Americas, Inc. supports the development of facilities and a research test bed at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Airbus has partnered with the Eagle Flight Research Center on Hybrid Electric Propulsion Research and believes this research—led by Eagle Flight Research Center—warrants our pledge to provide industry subject matter expertise to this effort.

Senior Vice President Strategy and Corporate Development Airbus Americas

Hartzell Propeller believes that the Eagle Flight Research Center’s research on Hybrid Electric Aircraft Propulsion is important enough that we have pledged our industry resources to the effort. We believe that a new research facility with a test cell for hybrid electric propulsion research would be an asset to the industry.

— Brian E. Meyer Manager, Aircraft Applications Engineering Hartzell Propeller Inc.

“The successful development of a research test bed in Daytona Beach, Florida at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will provide opportunities for collaboration on joint university/industry research in flight testing, fully electric aircraft propulsion, electrified hybrid aircraft propulsion and other areas of common interest. GE Aviation plans to provide general consulting support to Embry-Riddle, as appropriate, should this proposal be selected for funding. GE Aviation also will consider teaming with Embry-Riddle for future programs should this program result show sufficient potential. —Shawn O’ Day GM, Marketing Business and General Aviation & Integrated Systems
