Behind the Art
The book of Revelation is undeniably complex, filled with mystery, prophecy, and hope. When designing for our weekend message series and ultimately this book, I was inspired by the tension between light and darkness, illustrating both the revelatory nature of the book and its depth. The bright colors symbolize the illumination of truth, while the deep, dramatic tones acknowledge the weight of what's revealed. At the heart of Revelation is the assurance that the Light has already won. I wanted to express this by showing darkness and light colliding, building tension, and ultimately bursting with beauty. As I reflected on the promise of the New Heavens and the New Earth, I hoped to convey something almost surreal, reminding us that we can trust God's plan, even when we can't fully grasp what's to come. A key inspiration for me was the sun —its light, power, and healing properties—drawing a parallel to the Son, Jesus. For the supporting art, I incorporated symbols that reflect Revelation’s message: • An arch, a window, and negative-space letters: to illustrate the idea of God revealing the future, giving us a glimpse into his coming kingdom, even though we can't fully know what that will look like. • A scroll: representing both the prophetic message of Revelation and the scroll on which John recorded his vision. • A throne: symbolizing God’s authority, with Jesus at his right hand. • Stars: pointing to the majesty of the heavens and the eternal reign of Christ. More than just a design, this piece is an invitation to lean into the mystery of Revelation, to embrace both its warnings and its promises, and to set our eyes on the hope and beauty of what is to come.
