By Donald G. Davis, Ph.D., Prof. Of Church History, Talbot Theological Seminary

Frederick W. Robertson. The outlines are arranged in the order of the ap pearance of the texts in the Bible. 95 pages; cloth; Baker Book House; Grand Rapids, Mich.; $1.75. f i r e in Thy Mouth By Donald G. Miller Every year brings new books on the subject of preaching-— usually published lectures in seminaries and universities. This volume is no ex ception, since the core of the text rep resents the Westervelt Lectures deliv ered by the author at Austin Presby terian Theological Seminary, Austin, Texas. Dr. Miller reveals a vast ac quaintance with the literature of preaching, and the reader is contin ually coming upon references to, and anecdotes about, his favorite preach ers of bygone days, whoever they might chance to be. Without com mitting himself to every view ex pressed, the reader will find himself greatly stimulated by this book. 160 pages; cloth; Abingdon Press, New York; $2.50. A Historical Approach to Evanyelical Worship By llion T. Jones This is a technical book for pastors and church architects and deals with the antecedents of modern evangelical worship in the Old and New Testa ments and throughout the history of the church. Special attention is given to the changes which took place in Protestantism at the time of the Ref ormation and the tendency toward more liturgical elements in the Re formed churches since a century ago. The section on symbolism of the sanc tuary describes the theological impli cations of the pulpit-centered and table (altar)-centered arrangements. The minister who is concerned about the worship in his church will find this a helpful book. 319 pages; cloth; Abingdon Press, New York; $4.50. The Unwanted Legacy By Carrie Meyers Gruhn A mixup over an expected inheri tance from a rich uncle provides the setting for this novel. The Christian content is offset somewhat by love scenes which seem to detract rather than add to the expressed purpose of the book. The use of slang might also be questioned. 191 pages; cloth; Van Kampen Press, Wheaton, 111.; $ 2 . 00 . CONTINUED ►

Income Tax Guide By Bernard D. Bergreen and Sanford Soil

Pastors have many peculiar prob lems in connection with filing their individual income tax returns. Ber green and Soil’s 1954 tax guide will answer hundreds of questions for busy pastors. Many legal deductions of in terest to ministers are dealt with, and the cost of this guide will come back many times to the purchaser. 160 pages; paper; Doniger & Raughley, Inc., Great Neck, N.Y.; $2.00. Modern Uncertainty and The author, Professor of Systematic Theology in the Free University of Amsterdam (stronghold of Dutch Re formed orthodoxy), delivered these six lectures at Calvin College and Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, as the Calvin Foundation Lectures. The authority of the Bible, old and new Protestantism, and the church of Christ in our modem world are the chief subjects dealt with. The author combats both modern liberal ism and neo-orthodoxy. The nature of the Protestant Reformation is dis cussed in a masterful chapter. These are challenging addresses for our day. 86 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $1.50. A Call to the Unconverted By Richard Baxter It is good to see this reprint of an old-fashioned book — one which has been used of God to the salvation of uncounted thousands. Richard Baxter was a Church of England minister with pronounced Puritan sympathies; he finally left the established church. Written in 1657, almost 300 years ajgo, the language sometimes will seem strange — however, the eternal issues are faithfully presented, togeth er with answers to objections to recog nition of the claims of God. 142 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $1.95. 101 Select Sermon Outlines Another volume in the Minister’s * Handbook Series has put in its appear ance. The outlines are from the ser mons of such outstanding preachers as Charles H. Spurgeon, F. B. Meyer, C. J. Vaughan, Charles Simeon, Ho- ratius Bonar, Matthew Henry and Christian fa ith By G. C. Berkouwer
