Desert Twilight
I love the lofty mountains, Secure in the strength they portray; But my heart cries out for the desert, With its calm at the close of day. There’s a long, gray rift of mist and cloud, Lying low on the mountain side; While the shadows slowly gather, O’er the canyon deep and wide. The last bright rays of the setting sun, Linger long on the distant trees; There comes a waft of moving air, ’Tis the desert’s gentle breeze. Hear the clear sharp call of a wild thing— The answering call of his mate; And the myriad sounds of insects, The music which they create— These call me here again, and again, Far, far from the world’s mad way; ’Tis here I find God’s calm and peace, And strength for another day.

Alice Aly has this to say about her poem “ Desert Twilight.” “My husband’s illness forced us to leave our home in the Midwest and seek a climate such as only the Arizona desert can provide. At first the desert had a depress ing influence on me but later I became reconciled and learned to love it. This poem is an effort to interpret my reaction to and love for the Arizona desert.”
