Aug. 7 — Betrayed in a Garden — John 18:1-3 HEART OF THE LESSON We now begin a series of four studies on the general theme— “A Visit to Bible Lands.” The Holy Land is the most sacred spot in the world, and this for many reasons: It was there that the holy history of God’s ancient people, the Jews, was enacted; it was there that the greatest life was lived, the life of our Saviour; it was there that He died and rose again; it is to the Mount of Olives, in the Holy Land, that the feet of the returning Saviour will first touch (Zech. 14:4). Let us, then, come reverently into the setting of our Lord’s life. STUDY QUESTIONS 1. The study of the Garden scene in Gethsemane reminds us of what other famous Garden in the Bible? (Gen. 2:7-17.) 2. What miracle did God perform in the Garden of Eden? (Gen. 2:7.) 3. Is it said of any other creature that it was made “ in the image of God” ? (Gen. 1:26, 27.) 4. W e are told today that much of the evil in the world is due to poor surround ings—to environment. Would you say that Gen. 2:8 substantiates this view? What does man need more than anything else to bring peace to his own heart and to his surroundings? (cp. John 3:3-5; 2 Cor. 5:17; Jer. 31:33, etc.) 7. What provision did God make for man in the Garden? (Gen. 2:9.) Has He taken as much care for the spiritual food of His people? (cp. Jer. '15:16; 1 Pet. 2:2.) 8. What occupation did God give man in the Garden? (Gen. 2:15.) Is it good for the Christian to be busy? (cp. Matt. 28:18-20; Rom. 12:11; Matt. 9:37, 38.) 9. How is the goodness of God exhibited in Gen. 2:16? 10. What prohibition did God state in v. 17? Why this prohibition? Remember that God wants us to serve Him and obey Him willingly and lovingly, this is why He gives us choices to make, and the responsibility of obedience. 11. Why was the Saviour in such agony in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane? (Mark 14:32-34.) 12. For what did the Saviour pray in w . 35, 36? The closer the believer walks with the Lord the more he will find his prayers being answered because he is learning to pray according to the will of God. The important thing in prayer, then, is to “ grow in grace and in the knowledge of . . . Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Let us concentrate on the will of God for our lives; let us surrender ourselves to God and His will (Rom. 12:1, 2), and then we will day by day demonstrate that His will is “ good, and acceptable, and The entire 90th Psalm is a psalm on prayer because, like many of the psalms, it is a prayer. W e ought to note the en tire psalm in our study today. What is the meaning of verses 1, 2? How does the eternity of God contrast with man’s earthly perfect” (Rom. 12:2). STUDY QUESTIONS 1.
