To further complicate things, trans people may not remember they have started or been through the transition process. If their partner or a friend is transitioning, they may forget. Both scenarios can be confusing and distressing in a situation that is already difficult. Ah-ha number five. Now, add hormone therapy to the mix. As with any medication, if the person forgets to take their hormones or suddenly stops taking them, they may develop more health problems. Caregivers need to be aware of and support the treatment the person is having. Education Matters Our Visibility Matters Cultural Responsiveness Training helps care providers gain the tools needed to create a safe place for older LGBTQI+ people to be their authentic selves so their unique needs can be met. This important training matters more than I could have ever imagined. I recommend it for anyone, regardless of whether they serve as a caregiver. Understanding the complicated layers LGBTQI+ people with Alzheimer's and dementia face is key to providing care with dignity and respect that everyone deserves.
